Security in Down Town

Hi,

I came to Cairo at the beginning of this month, and started studying Arabic here.

As I am living in Down Town,on Ramsis Street, everyone I was talking to told me it's a real unsafe Place, i should never leave the house in the evening, can't even go out alone in the afternoon, and, since its close to Tahrir, never leave the house on Fridays.

But is that quarter really that dangerous - because I am really irritated now...

Thank you,
Deborah

It is not like that, You can go out very often even at late time. Take a walk (be street wise)  avoid any crowd. If it is not safe go to Hurrieya for a beer or even go for a coffee or shisha in Boursa Avenue stuffed with cafes and discover it.  Why do they go there if it is not safe? Stay away from Tahrir on Fridays.

Just not be alone

i live in downtown and i dont really have much concern about the security. as someone said before - be street wise, use common sense. sometimes i m coming home late and nothing so far alerted me.but again.. if u gonna ask for trouble.. you will find it.

and the whole idea of staying home on fridays.. no.. just dont go to tahrir.. the rest of cairo awaits :D

I wouldn't walk around alone. I've noticed, even with my husband by my side, that harassment downtown is far worse than in other areas of Cairo. Always stay FAR away from crowds!!! We found ourselves suddenly surrounded by one and a group of men began grabbing me. Luckily the police intervened and escorted me to safety.

from my view "you will be safe but you have to avoid the crowded places, and bit more modest unless you want lots of attention, Let's just call it being culturally sensitive, and on street don't talk much with any one, and choose a good company to be in a group, and never be in tahrir on Firday"

Good luck, and usually have a nice day, btw, How is your arabic now?

Thanks for your advices...

Its good to hear that, so I don't need to feel that closed in as I did before...

Although it probably  might still be an Idea to search for a room near to Zamalek or another more liberal area, because I always have the problem that people think I am egyptian and don't like to see me without headscarf...

@malsi : don't ask for my arabic :D the problem is since we learn classical arabic, we started with learning how to read and write, and Grammar... so I am really in a lack of vocabulary

Regarding the Vocabulary, it is not a big deal, just go out every day and practic what you learn and lesson curfuly.. and try one by one to know some slang words.

Good Luck

Hi!

I'm new in Cairo and I would like to take a look on Tahrir Square. Do you think it's too dangerous, 2 girls by theirselves? Or should we just not do it on Friedays?

I'm looking forward to hear your opinions =)

Thanks

Welcome to Egypt.
Lisa, sure you can go, but on Friday it will be very crowded, beside that at a moment the demonstration may be turn to clashes, so for your safety don't go on friday.

Good Luck

Definitely you are right, but your friends may be they are used to go their so they know how to deal with the situation, or they have a good company....my advise for newcomers don't go their unless you have an experience or a good company

Thanks & Good Luck

You can go to Tahrir, it's safe, but keep your eyes open, it's true that this friday might be different from the other friday.
