Moved here - British

Hi,
I'm a native english speaking teacher that has just moved here in the past 3 weeks. Finding the language barrier difficult here, with hardly anyone willing to try their English out on me. I am beginning to learn words in Russian but cannot yet speak many (short) sentences.
Darren

Re: Moved here - British

Love the City, my apartment and the school. The people are very friendly and I feel very safe here. The mountains still take my breath away every morning when I go to work. However, I am surprised that not many locals can speak any English at all. I was under the impression that if anything, it is the opposite that is the norm. Still, I am enjoying my Russian lessons and hope to carry on learning Russian online so that I may start to use it in everyday life.smile

Re: Moved here - British

Hi Darren - do you mind me asking where you are teaching? I am thinking of moving to Almaty (from UK) soon and am interested on any tips for schools - both as we have school (primary) age kids, and because my wife is a teacher who may look for work in the coming year. Any info on what you think of your school (and/or its competitors) would be really welcome. Thanks, Adam

Re: Moved here - British

I work at the Miras International School of Almaty, a private ed. school. There are plenty of schools here but mostly state schools and unfortunately I have no inside information of how good they are or how to get a job with one.

Have you considered signing up with a job agency? That's how I got my job here,

Kind Regards,
Darren

Re: Moved here - British

How r you doing Darren?
Hope you've loved Almaty, it's nice place with beatiful nature, especially montains.
My name is Abzal and live in Astana (the capital of Kz)
I lived in the East of London (Bournmouth about two hours from Heathrow airport), then in Scotland (Edinburgh)where I got Master Degree. I have lots of friend from different countries, and it would be my pleasure to help you with Russian.  I know that the best way to improve your language its practise, comunication as much as can with native speaker.(in my practise)
I am not a professional teacher, however I'll do my best that you might improve rus. Like friend to friend.

Cheers,
Abzal

Re: Moved here - British

Actually no need to learn Russian while staying in Almaty, unless you'd like to read Dostoevsky smile

For all Britons - feel free if you would like any local's assistant in Almaty city.

Re: Moved here - British

Hi Darren,

I'm originally from Almaty.
I've been living in the UK for two years. Got my master degree in Newcastle University. Recently I came back to Almaty and I must admit I miss speaking English... as well as many other things about British culture of course.

I'd be glad to help you with Russian smile Please, feel free to drop me a line if you're still interested

Best,
Asel'
