Gardening in Nica

Hi new member here!!

Not an expat, but in the future!  My family does own property in leon Department that I want to landscape but I don't know anything about Nica USDA zones/heat zones or equivalent designations that will help me to choose plants.  I went to a nuresery in leon, (actually someone's house) and saw lots of great looking plants, but I want to research them on-line before buying anything.

I'll be going back to Nica 13 august for the holiday.  We;'ll be bringing lots of stuff to give out during Gertierie (spelling?).

Re: Gardening in Nica

Thanks!

There is one plant my brother in law translated into english with a common name of "hornet"  a really beautiful evergreen shrub with medium leaves with clusters of red or yellow flowers that I am trying to find in a Leon area nursery.

Other than that I'm also looking for a mango tree and plaintains to grow.  Camote (batata or sweet potatoe)vines I'll be growing and eating as well.

In Leon in the La Union supermarket they sell the camote (spelling?), which has a mild nut flavor if you like to eat them, and lots of over root crops.

I'm still learning about the native plants and food crops, but at La Union I was surprised to see a lack of vegetables.. maybe because they have to be imported.  The veggies I was familiar with didn't look that fresh.
