School ages in Australia

Dear All

We have applied for a 175 visa and according to our immigration agency it should be approved at the end of 2012.  My dilemma is that we have a 5 year old son who has to start grade one next year in SA.  As his birthday is in December, the school psychologist here had advise us to keep him for another year in Grade R.  This implies that he will turn 7 at the end of 2012, thus 7 going into Grade one in Aus.  According to all the information I could gather, it seems as if the children has to start school (Kindergarten) the year they turn 6.  Thus: If we allow him to repeat grade R in SA, he might be 18 months older than his class mates in Aus. Are there anyone out there who had a similar situation, or who can offer me some advise? How strict is the schools with "older" children.  I've heared somewhere that the education dept could sometimes allow a learner to jump a grade, which I find hard to be believe as there is a huge difference between grade one and two in any school curriculum.  Please help!!!smilebig_smile
