Moving to Foshan

Hi everybody!

I will probably move to Gaoming (Foshan's suburb) soon.
Coming from the North of China, I would like to ask the following question to people living in this region:
- Is Foshan a nice play to stay and live?
- Speaking mandarin, can I communicate easily over there with Chinese people or should I start learning Cantonese?
- Do they speak English, I mean better than in the North?
- Is there lots of foreigners? Some nice place to go out during we?

Thanks in advance for your answers.
Have a nice day!

Re: Moving to Foshan

- Is Foshan a nice play to stay and live?

Yes, I believe so. Much better compared to Guangzhou at least, I think

- Speaking mandarin, can I communicate easily over there with Chinese people or should I start learning Cantonese?

Most of people here can understand Mandarin although not good at speaking mandarin, just feel free to speak mandarin if you know how to speak. Most people here are nice. However, you may also try to learn Cantonese if you have time available. Cantonese is much more preferable here.

- Do they speak English, I mean better than in the North?

Yes, esp the youth and the ones well educated. I always believe the pronunciation in South is better than the one in North

- Is there lots of foreigners? Some nice place to go out during we?

Foshan city is big. In Chancheng, Nanhai, Shunde district there are more foreigners. Gaoming ... I think just few. Weekend you may go to Xiqiao for mountain-climbing, which is a nice place for rest and to take fresh air.

I am native Cantonese, living in Nanhai district.

For assistant, just feel free to contact me.
