Does anyone have any experience moving to Belize in a RV?

Katzgar, I appreciate the thought but we are aware of the climate and the fact that it is humid.  I was hoping for advice on the move itself, not thoughts on if we should go or not.  I was really hoping to get some advice from people that have actually moved there in this way.

Or if anyone has driven an RV from the states through Mexico to Belize and has advice on that it would be helpful as well.

careful on your trip through Mexico.  There are those who will run you off of the road in order to commit robbery.  Not a plan killer.  Just something to be aware of.  Check it out on the internet.  There are advisories posted.

Yeah we have done a lot of research on the trip through Mexico.  We know that there are places to avoid.  I think that we will just have to brave it, but we are staying away from the coast and crossing at one specific place that is said to be safer.  Hopefully there won't be any issues.

That would be the coast route.  You would be taking the route from Brownsville, Texas to Matamoros, then to Mexico City, then cut over to Chetumal, Mexico, then go on over into Corozal, Belize?

I'll have to look at a map but yes, it was down the middle until around Mexico City then diagonal to the coast around Yucatan then into Corozal.  Thanks for the link!

I'll contact my friend, Marc who has driven through Mexico many times.  He'll have better info than I.  I had considered only to drive FROM Belize to Brownsville, then have my car transported to Oregon, where it came from.

I think you were asking if anyone had driven an RV from the states to Belize.  The only firsthand knowledge I have of that was with 'doc' and his wife, Betty why drove a motor home from Texas and had just crossed into Mexico (if my memory serves me correctly) when they were driven off of the road by a car speeding at them.  It caused them to have to veer off of the road, and I think, the Motor home toppled over.  Betty was injured.  Doc was ok.  A good sam helped them out and took them to his house.  Someone told doc at that time that this is one tactic thieves do in order to rob.  I was just giving you the heads up.  The road narrows at the point where they were driven off of the road, and this caused them to swipe into a small bridge.

I cannot speak to the experience of living in an RV, but I did move here in one, and I loved the experience!
I drove myself and my cat in a 21' Toyota Dolphin from Washington State to Esperanza,near San Ignacio, Cayo. It was an adventure that I would not have missed! I used JohnP's route from Brownsville to Santa Elena (North border) with few issues. (send me a PM for the files). The roads can be very rough, and you will feel them in an RV! The toll roads are really pretty nice, though driving at night is still an issue in terms of potholes and repairs thereof. I think that I spent less than US$200 on tolls for the whole trip. I slept in rest stops in the USA, then at truck stops in MX.  About half of the gas stations took a credit card, others required cash. Cartejas (ATMs) can be hard to find, so get cash early if possible.
Never felt like I was not safe, except during the journeys through the cities. And there it was mostly the lack of directions and constant window-washers that frustrated me! {p.s. the window washers do an amazingly good job in such a short time span! And, hey, it's only a buck!}
I got off-course and hit Tuxmal and some "friendly" policemen who found an imaginary "infraction" and charged me a "fine" of US$200 for it, then gave me a nice escort back to the highway. No, not speaking Espanol did not save me from paying... I would not have made that wrong turn with a human co-pilot. The cat just slept on the couch and let me do ti!
Plan to take it slowly, the roads are not always smooth, but the "shoulder driving and passing" makes it not stressful to be going at your own speed. Also, I would invest in a Garman or similar GPS and make sure that it is fully loaded with maps before you leave. I was flying blind, with Google Maps being no help at all )("lost GPS signal" was all it ever told me.)
P.S. I did not have GPS nor WiFi, but I am told that there are RV parks in Mexico. Might be a good idea to pre-arrange your visits to them. There are no signs for them that I ever saw.  Of course, I never saw a US license plate, nor and RV, the whole time that I was inn Mexico. That was more than a little disconcerting!
Last thought: It felt so damned good to clear the border into Belize. Free at last!

I have heard that its better if you travel the turnpikes, rather than the regular roads. I have a rich Mexican friend who had an RV in Mexico. He seemed OK. I have another who drives down to San Miguel often, using the turnpikes. It makes for a relatively safe trip.

So what did you do with the RV once you were there?

Are there any places to park an RV that have hook ups?

There are a couple of campgrounds just west of San Ignacio. No idea about their costs or hookups.

I am actually trying to sell the RV, as it was a means to an end, not really my thing
I'll be posting ads on expat sites, assuming that is where likeliest buyers will be found. Maybe some reader that is building and needs a good base home during the process?

If I was more mechanically inclined and more of a business type, I would consider keeping it for a vacation rental.  But I am batting 0 for 2 on those qualifications!
