Retire to Belize with HIV

I want to retire to Belize and qulify for the Retired Incentive program but I have tested poitive for the HIV virus due to a blood transfusion. I am a helathy 53 year old American that qualifies for all the other conditions.

I know part of the process is taking an AIDS test, but it doesn't say if you are disqualified if you test positive.

Does anyone have information on this or know where I can find the answer.

Thanks

Hello lakesideman and welcome to Expat.com!

I hope that other members will soon share their experience with you.

Harmonie.

I would recommend you contact the Belize Tourism Board (http://www.belizeretirement.org/contactus.shtml) and ask them - phone will probably get a faster response than email.

I believe you cannot be HIV positive, even though their website does not specifically say that. I've read it elsewhere, like this site for instance (http://belize.fm/qualified-retired-persons-qrp-program/).

I would be curious to know what you find out.  Belize is in its infancy dealing with this issue - similar to the States in the early 80's, so there is still a great deal of misunderstanding on the part of the citizens as to how one gets HIV, etc.  It leads to job discrimination, and people actually being afraid to go in for testing - it's kind of sad.

Look forward to hearing what you find out.  Take care,

Sharon Hiebing

Thanks Sharon. I will keep the forum updated.

Hi @lakesideman, did you ever find out the answer to your question? I am also curious of the outcome. Much appreciated.

@ denverguy > I am not sure that you will find an answer to your question, as lakesideman did not showed up since 2011.

If you have some questions to ask members, i invite you to create your own topic on the Belize forum and we will do our best to help. :)

Thanks
