On the path to discovery

I just moved to Jakarta with my husband and two year old daughter. We are Italians and have lived abroad for 13 years now. This is the first time we live in South East Asia after visiting the region many times. My first impression of Jakarta is that it can be scary and fascinating at the same time. I look so much forward to start to explore it and I just do not know where to begin. Also because I know nobody and I do not speak the language yet. Hopefully this website will help? :)

Have a read of Fred's thread, which is now on its 30th page:

welcome to jakarta mate, if you want to explore jakarta, you should go to "Hutan Mangrove" In pantai indah kapuk, it's a good place. you can go there by using taxi or "transjakarta"

Hey Nerosuede,
I hope you settled in already after a month or two. It is indeed as what you said - a path to discovery.
Especially with a young toddler in tow.

Since you mentioned in the advert, living in Kebayoran Baru area.
You can try the Discovery Centre for nursery and activities.

Start slowly. Do the tourist things get on the free double decker bus and see some sights. Do visit the malls to help feel safer here
Travel by blue bird taxi or grab car, visit as many restaurants at the top of the many tall buildings here, eat everything and try to visit the old city when you can.
Escape to nearly by Bogor and Bandung and in good weather spend time on the Thousand Islands.
Visit as many other islands as possible, trying not to fall in love with Bali but somewhere less over developed. Use the Italian embassy as a way of networking with people from your country and just enjoy it here.
For the next few months it will rain and hard and that will slow everything down but its still fun.
