I am from Europe and moved to Melbourne for love.
I understood that Australia represented the 'promised land' for many countries in this part of the world and I thought so too for a while.
However before deciding to come in this country people should realise that it is not that awsome, in fact it is a very difficult place to live in.
If your company decide to relocate you in Australia that is another story but if you have to do it by yourself you better be ready to sacrifice yourself for a while. Maybe your next generation only will be able to adapt and to integrate the society.
First of all, are yo able to perform an activity by yourself? what is your level of English? The majority of the immigrants will have to create their own business to survive since finding employment is almost impossible if you have to compete with Australians having the same type of qualification. Australians will always receive priority. If you decide to pursue in the qualification it will have to be recognized by the state you are living in and you will probably have to go back to school for a while to get an additional Australian certificate to become more 'local'. The cost and time to spend there is huge and no warranty to get the job after all... Crisis is here too and a lot of businesses are struggling. you better be ready to fight for your bread. nothing is for free down here and people are ready to take yours!
Secondly, do you have enough savings ? Cost of housing is crazy. Immigrants have to live in sharerooms to be able to pay the rent! Yes the reality implies that you must be ready to share a room with 3 other people in a flat of 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, meaning 8 persons under the same roof. No joke. In case you are ready to pay more, then maybe you can afford 1 room for you only but forget to rent a flat by yourself. Real estates agencies will not authorise you to rent any property if you not having a 'real income' through a 'real job'.
Third, are you planning to come here with your family or just you? Once in Australia, you are at the end of the world. No were to escape if you do not have the dollars mate ! Cost of flights to get out are crazy, once you are here you better not want to see your friends or family too often. Even if you plan to travel around the country it is very very expensive and some how not exeptional at all if you have already discovered the world. Europe, Asia, Africa have by far more interesting places to visit.
Fourth, are you ready to stay in your community, is this community ready to help you? In Australia, the Chinese stay together, the Indians same, the Japanese as well etc etc. So you might end with the same people, same problems as well.
Fifth, are you planning to stay here forever? Many immigrants stay here just long enough to get the citizenship (minimum 2 years after beeing permanent resident which takes 3/4years) then go back to their country. why ? At least to have worked to get the graal, the passport. Otherwise, no idea maybe not so welcoming place after all specially with a tough crisis and lower levels of employment.
My advice would be that if you are young, qualified, without any hope in your home country, facing death then maybe Australia would be a better place to live in. Otherwise, if you have a life in your home country no bother, it is not worth it.
I always thought the country needed to feed its own people not the other way around.. was probably good 20 years ago.

Think twice before spending years of efforts to reach a no through road.
Moving to Australia to get a Job maybe not a such good idea.
malex1, You make some good points, and Migrants to any country should be aware of these, especially when you mentioned that Australians will always receive priority for employment.
All countries will normally employ their own people first, and as you say; the only jobs available are the ones Australians cannot have or want.
That's why the 457 Visa was created, for people to do the jobs that no Australian was available for. ( IMMI: The employer must be able to provide evidence that there are no suitably qualified Australian workers available.)
Again, having a good grasp of the local language is vital, as employers everywhere tend to need you to communicate.
Unemployment is rising again, although still below average. But there are still many people looking for work, and teh employer will choose who they think is best.
Housing is very expensive in the areas that people want to live. Supply and demand is causing that.
However a 4 bedroom house on a half acre of land is still reasonable for those who wish to live a little inland.
eg: Just 5 years average wages for that example in Toowoomba. But if you wanted that in Sydney Centre, I guess it would be more like 50 years wages. Not everyone earns the average wage though ($80,000 per year Full time)
Some nationalities do tend to choose to stick to there own groups, but that is by choice.
Bottom line though. Australia makes immigration hard for a reason, they want the best, and they don't make it easy for anyone.
