Making phone calls in Taiwan

Hi,

When settling in Taiwan, one of the priorities is to be able to make phone calls.

How to proceed to get a landline installed in Taiwan?

What are the mobile operators?

What is your average monthly budget?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Maximilien

Chunghwa Telecom is the biggest telecom company. It is government owned, but efficient. It has a near monopoly in the landline business and is the largest mobile company as well. For mobile, Far Eastone and Taiwan Mobile are close competitors. Mobile services of all the 3 are good, but it may be useful to stick to Chunghwa if you plan to take a landline as a package deal might work better (eg - Chunghwa also provides home internet services with or without a landline and you can use the same connection on the move across the country through Chunghwa wifi hot spots free of additional cost). Pricing of all 3 operators is nearly equal. Telecom services are not exactly cheap in Taiwan. Tariff is around TWD 7-8 per minute for local calls, though there are many variations. ISD tariffs differ from country to country, but Skype/Viber paid services are strongly recommended v/s using the telecom operator.
