Buying a car in Hungary

Hi,

To be able to move in Hungary, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Hungary: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

New car: We bought a new car in Hungary in 2006. It was very easy to do. We bought a car off the showroom floor and we paid cash, so did not deal with any financing or auto loan issues. The auto dealer where we purchased our car took care of all the registration paperwork for us, and even offered us insurance via a third party insurance dealer (auto insurance is mandatory in Hungary) so we could drive the car out of the showroom. We later changed insurance carriers, but buying the insurance from the dealer at time of purchase was just so easy at the time to resist not having to deal with insurance issues at time of purchase. Maybe we paid a bit more, but peace of mind and not having to deal with Hungarian paperwork and another Hungarian bureaucracy we were not familiar with at the time (we just moved to Hungary) made it an easy decision to let the dealer handle it all for us.

Used car: We are actually selling this same car now as a used car. There are many used car web sites in Hungary where we listed this car, but those are typically in Hungarian. Also periodically check the cars for sale classified ads at expat-blog:

We have had a few interested parties call about the car but have not yet sold it yet. Not sure yet how this will go with a private sale. So also have contacted our original dealer about possibly selling our car at their business under consignment terms. I will post here again with results, when, how, and if we sell our used car.
