Swedish cuisine

Hi,

When living abroad, tasting the local cuisine is part of discovering the country.

What is your favorite food in Sweden?

What is the local speciality?

Share with us the local tastes of Sweden and why not your best recipe.

Thank you in advance,

Priscilla

To be honest...I find Swedish food rather bland. I come from a country full of flavour and spice and a huge Indian community, so curry and spice was a frequent meal. So any home made meals are my favourite because I can add what I like.

Ingredients used here in Sweden for typical Swedish dishes are almost the same as in Poland. Although I find food here less spicy. And sometimes flavours are mixed in weird way for me... sweet herrings, sweet bread, salty butter and liquorice candies which are salty and sweet at the same time :) But generally it is ok for me. Not spectacular but acceptable :)

I love Swedish food!
The seafood: salmon, cray fish, prawns; pickled herring.
The mushrooms and berries - all of which you can find and pick for yourself in the forrest. Wild strawberries everywhere.
The homemade cordials - from anything available in the season.
Delicious baked goods for all the 'fika' it's essential to eat!

If I would share two new favorites, that would have to be the saffron buns in December...
Ok, I adapted this recipe a little from the typical Swedish variety and filled these beauties with dates:

And secondly, a old Swedish comfort food, Kropp Kakor - here again, 'slightly' modified :-)

I have found another mysterious mix of flavors recently... sweet mustard  (but sweet like hell, like only sugar inside) .. ughhh :-/ Why??
:-D

I like "surströmming" inspite of its foul smell that mostly don't like and the yummy pyttipanna! :)
