Legal question in Vietnam - Gfriend cannot stay in my apartment?!

Hi all

I have been told by my apartment building that my girlfriend cannot stay the night in my building without having a marriage certificate. I find this strange as we have not had any problems at all in hotels.
Is this still the law here?

Here's another discussion on the subject

No, it's not the law. It's your building manager's own rule. Just ignore and see what happens.

Unless something has recently changed, it's a law. I'm guessing the hotels you stayed at were a three star or lower. A 4, 5, and most 3 star hotels will not let a national say overnight with a foreigner.

As far as renting a house or an apartment, it depends on the landlord and neighbors. If someone complains or the landlords doesn't want her there, they will bring the police and make her leave.

Dear Kiwi,

There is no law about this, I think it is the rule of apartment management. You can discuss with them or just ignore...

I see the actual law changed in 2000 (see link below) but is still often still enforced (I've experienced it myself). Either way, I'd talk with the manager and not just ignore him. Believe me, they can cause a lot of problems and there is little you can do about it.

Right, that law is gone long time. However, there is a law which states that every person staying in the house must be registered with the local ward police. Some landlords or hotel owners are also afraid the 'gf' could be a prostitute, which is illegal in VN and can bring (many kinds of) trouble to the owner.

Yes man, I think your appartment building would like to be sure that tomorrow you won't come with a man like your girl friend :)
So just get married with her as soon as possible

Regards

Of course it's the law. Only people registered to a specific property can stay there. That's why you have to give your passport to the hotel manager when you stay there.

The owner calls the shots.  Perfectly legal for him/her to do so....but technically, cohabitation without marriage, is ilegal.  And, looking for a handout, cops will often  hassle you if you do not register at the precinct.

You don't have to put up with this shit from your building management, move out if I were you.

Or as an alternative, go to a hotel for short stay.
