Music in Mauritius

Hi,

Music is said to be a universal language. Indeed it helps to discover and better understand the culture of a country.

What are the most popular music genres in Mauritius? How about traditional music and instruments?

Who are the local artists you would recommend?

Where can you listen to them: are there any concerts or music festival held regularly?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Kenjee

as diverse as the culture of Mauritius so is the musical tastes.

SEGA is of course the most traditional of these and it comes in several forms, the SEGA DANCE which seems to be reserved for hotels and restaurants these days, however many big family parties will see non-dancers dancing sega i.e. family members.  The music side has changed over the years from the traditional instruments to the use of more mainstream instruments such as the SEGA produced by Alain Ramanisum etc.  However go to any beach where the locals go on a Saturday , Sunday or public holiday and you will no doubt find several local people playing the Ravanne drum with a triangle (beer bottle being hit with a pebble or coin often improvised) and singing many Sega songs. Often if the song is very popular and rhythmic then the girls , women and some of the men can be seen dancing.

A popular twist on music is also the fusion of SEGA and REGGAE  or what is been called SEGGAE,  there are some places one called ZANZIBAR in Flic-En-Flac where this is a regular Friday Night music event.  On the professional front there are several talented SEGGAE artists who have made there own records and have appeared in concerts on their own or alongside the more traditional SEGA artists.

One should not forget the indian community for their input to the Sega type music in what is called  bhojpuri
