The reason. Just as I told before, I did some research before I posted here. I contacted with a consultant, told her everything about myself. She told me directly that it's hopeless if I want to immigrate via skilled worker, because my major (business management) is not Canada needed and my working experience is not enough(only two years until now). But she still evaluated me (which is necessary if I want to apply for immigration to Canada) and the marks is not good. However, if I take IELTS and get 7,plus I must know French then there might be little little hope for me. The problem is I know nothing about French and don't like it.
Now I have no idea what I can do to go there. That's why I am here asking for opinions.  Is it possible for me to apply for a job in Canada and get a work visa then go there? (Speaking of this, I've already send many many emails to Canadian companies, most of them got non-reply, some told me that I should be a resident in Canada,which is so frustrated )
Any advice?

shayla, I think I have a good new for you. There are many programs avalable for the immigration in Canada and I think your consultant didn't check all of them. I just checked the program of Provincial Nominees, the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program to be exact and I made a simulation about your case (at least, the few I know about it): I got 59 points and only 50 are required . Let me tell you some points according to what you wrote:

Consultant: Do you really think you need a consultant?
Many people could by themselves prepare their file. It's true that the consultant could help, but if you have a good diploma, a good experience, and you speak English (you can use French only if you have to immigrate to Québec province), and have just few money for the first 3 month to subsist in Canada,… that is suffisent, and you don't need a consultant.
However if you could offer it it's okay !

Probably you have some knowledge in Finance, accounting, or you can also try to work in a company specialized in restauration, or accomodation service … anyway there is a hope somewhere , and I wish I can help you more, so think again about all the other issue.


Ahh there is also the program of Provincial nominees:

Persons who immigrate to Canada under the Provincial Nominee Program have the skills, education and work experience needed to make an immediate economic contribution to the province or territory that nominates them. They are ready to establish themselves successfully as permanent residents in Canada.
To apply under the Provincial Nominee Program, applicants must be nominated by a Canadian province or territory.

As Abdel said, don't discourage yourself! ... you have some good skills which Canada needs, but indeed the consultant you saw in China made an evaluation of your case as skilled worker only. I checked it from my side and indeed I saw that, despite your good skills, the amount of your points isn't enough for the skilled workers program. But there are some others programs available and I will tell you soon, there are many things to explain about that and I need time to write all that

Nice post... the info that you 2 gave Shayla encourage me. I'm kind of in the same case that she is respect to the job finding (wrote to many companies but no response from them). I am Daniel, l hold a Bachelor in Environmental Studies and hace 2 yrs. of experience.
Now I live in Venezuela and I am making the paperwork to send it to the Canadian Embassy in Caracas. But a thing that I still do not know is how an immigrant can do once he or she just landed! How to get a house or an apartment? There are offices which can help to immigrants to do these things?

Preparation should be done before immigrating to Canada, I mean by contacting landlords of apartment via internet announcement.
I know it's a little hard, but for some people it works .

You can also check at the beginning for hotels cheap but good, and try to stay on it less than 10 days (because after 10 days or 2 weeks it costs almost as one month rent).
Then during those 10 days or 2 weeks, try to look for a roommate (if you are alone) there are many announcement at universities. But if you are with family it's better to look for an apartment rather than a room or a roommate .

Last but not least there are so many organization and association helping immigrant. Look which city you will move to and contact them before to travel in order to be more prepared and maybe also to have an apartment waiting for you there.

I'm Lynn and am currently waiting for approval for Canadian PR for myself and my family.  I wished that I have read the posts earlier as I have paid a Consultant five thousand dollars to process the PR application.   Am waiting for approval reply now.

Please help me on which province is good.  I have considered Ottawa as the houses are reasonable.  But there are comments about it being like a sleepy forest. Is Montreal a good place for immigrants?  My daughter is studying to be a diploma registered nurse in Singapore.  What are the chances of continuing her degree over there?  Which University is well known and offers accelerated degree?  Are there hospitals that can sponsor this? 

Most people immigrate to Vancouver, right?  I wonder why.  Is it because of language.  How are Canadians overall?  You all sound very nice.

I think Montreal is a good place for immigrants since many of them decide to live here. But many of the english-speaking people prefer to move to Toronto or Vancouver, especially chinese and others asian people, because it is easier for them to speak and find a good job.
About your daughter, I think it would be better for her if she enroles in a nurse school here and get her diploma here. Canadians diplomas makes far easier to find a good job and if she has one, I am very sure that she won't wait to get a job.
You ask, why Vancouver? I think, in the past, Chinese people immigrate by boat and Vancouver is the first harbour that is reached in Canada at the other side of the Pacific Ocean. So I think it is the main reason why, bit by bit, Chinese people increased their population and now they are at least 1/3 of the population in Vancouver. So, you told you are in Singapore, so you probably speak english and mandarin. You shouldn't have so much difficulties in Vancouver, but prepare you well before coming.

By boat??  Wow, that sounds like a bit of a History lesson yeah.  In Singapore, my ancestors come here by boat too. 

Vancouver - it is voted as the most liveable city in world right?  Ok - good for people who immigrated there way back.  But Vancouver house prices are also the most expensive.  But nothing beats Singapore.  Here, we are so short changed for space.

I believe one has to speak French in Montreal which in Quebec?   Saw some attractive houses on the internet in Quebec with decent prices (I prefer to pay in full, if possible).

As for my daughter, she has to start her diploma this year as I'm still pending for PR status.  It is a 3 years course and by then, we should be prepared to invest in Canada in terms of a house or maybe a biz.  Let's see.

I would like to switch on some light into the question about the best place to live in Canada.

Everyone probably pondered what makes a city a good place to live in. Is it the job (employment rate)? Salaries? climate? Real estate (home prices)? Cost of living? safety (crime rate) ? the availability of doctors (people forget such this criteria)?

It's surely a bit of each of those factors, plus many more than a dozen other factors, and it depends mostly on the people themselves.

A person who is in front of few years of retirement will not pay attention to the employment rate, but most probably about the number of doctors per habitant, and a young single professional will prefer to relocate in a place where his job field is highly on demand  and he will not pay attention to the daycare places (as he has no babies) etc….

So it depends on the person, or precisely on the ''needs'' of the person, plus …… the affordability of the city.

Vancouver is known as one of the best cities, especially for its nice weather but climate only, goes not so far, of course. To enter the climatological paradise of vancouver, you have to pay more than $500,000 for an average home.

In my opinion it's preferable to start by looking for ''where is the job (according to the field of work of the person) is in demand'', plus the affordability of the house, then safety and so on.. etc…..

It will be good to put some important critera that a person prefer according to his own style of life and then, to look for the best offer.

In few weeks I will bring the most recent survey for the 2010 edition of '' the best canada's place to live''.

You're right about the houses prices in Montreal, they still are affordable. I give you here a link where you will find many houses. The best prices are in the south shore of Montreal, a correct house with land, garden, 3 bedrooms etc...  costs 200000$-300000$. New homes may be a bit more expensive however.

I live in Vancouver for many years whit the huge Asian community it would make sense for you to focus here..we see many Asian coming in Vancouver ,at least you don't have to l speak French and you can try to get in any English school you will get your student visa very quickly ten you will see if the life is better here to china ...i see many chines peoples going back to they country so this is absolute not the best country in the world....

You are Chinese from China?? I'm from Singapore.  You might be right there about Asian community but I believe that we should try to assimilate into the host country culture instead of sticking to own race.  But in reality, it might not be so easy, unless there is some sort of inter marriages and there is extended family etc.  Hmmm...... Just thinking out loud...if my kids married another race, I'm sure the grandkids would be damn attractive.   Oh..that's just my opinion.

But Vancouver houses prices is the most expensive.  I intend to sell my Singapore house and pay in full for a house there, with some left over for my daughter and son Universities in Canada and retirement/business.  Therefore house prices is a major consideration. 

Question : Are university fees cheaper for PRs compared to
Foreigner?  This is one of reason why I go for PR.  Else how to get a cheaper foreign education.  Is criterias to get in easier for locals and PR also? I can't ask the Universities these as on a profit basis, they would prefer to accept foreign students.

If you plan to live in Montreal, then you will be able to make many chinese friends because there is a large china town here, all these people generally supports each others and help each others. It is the reason why chinese people generally succeed when they immigrate in a foreign country.

About the houses in Montreal, indeed I think you shouldn't wait too late to buy one because, in fact, I think the houses in Vancouver are overpriced. In Montreal they still are correct here but bit by bit, they don't stop increase. I immigrated here in 2004 and now I plan to buy my own house, in 3 months.

Don't listen people who have a very negative experience of Quebec. I think they were not well prepared enough, they thought Quebed is a paradise where one has only to  stoop to pick up banknotes on the sidewalk

Like everywhere in the world, people must do some efforts to succeed. But I feel you realist, indeed you have a dream but I think you see Canada as it is really and you will be well prepared before coming. Tell me why wouldn't you have a short trip before your immigration? I think it should be a good idea don't you think

Oh yes, if I wish to pay upfront, I think Montreal prices would be affordable.  Unless you are talking about a tiny apartment in Vancouver, then it would not make much difference in where I'm in Singapore now. 

Benoit, yes I'm a realist.  I worked hard all my life in Singapore.  Now I just want a less stressful and better life for me and my grown up kids.  I want more space, more financial freedom and still do some work or social contributions back to society.  I wish there is a "paradise" on Earth.  Well....we can look forward to heaven.   

Frankly, I was a bit concern about fbenkaiouche mentioning about Quebec not friendly for new immigrant and that many of her/his countrymen went back to China.  I hope fbenkaiouche can provide more details.  But your mention of a Chinatown in Montreal reassures me as well.  Actually we are not so Chinese also.  My daughter failed her Chinese in school and excel in English. 

So when are you coming to Singapore?   Are you able to help me with house hunting when the time comes.  How many hundreds of thousands must I bring to Canada when I landed as an immigrant?  Like you said - must be prepared.

and effectively most of job are related to government but there are places for private companies: Banks, Insurance, IT, etc....

There is a chance to everybody, people just have to have the right qualifications for the compatible position. It's maybe a little bit difficult for a newcomers but not impossible, as nowadays there are so many organization to help immigrants to find a place.

I'm 23 years old livin' in Brazil and graduated in both Business Administration (Bachelor) and Telecommunication (as a technician) .. wanting to live in Canada, I didn't get my visa yet and am still looking for information about how to get it, I'd like to immigrate as a skilled worker, I've been working in brazil for the last 8 years as an auxiliary administrative and I think its possible to apply for a skilled worker visa, could u guys tell me some information to help me to get my visa !? as i'll be an immigrant I think it's gonna be hard to find a job in some company in my area, I want something regarding Telecommunication and Administration, although what I see from most people moving out to Canada from Brazil is that they start working as a waiter or cashier.

p.s. and I'm learning English as well before I got in Canada to increase my chances finding a job !!

How often is the preference list updated? Are there any trends I should be aware of?

Some backstory:
I'm from Hungary, but lived in the USA and Germany before. I have an MSc in Electrical Engineering, specializing in computer networks, but moved into software development (even started a PhD in Computing Science once, never finished). Pretty good mix nowadays, with most systems involving the Internet :-) Oh, and I'm a great fan of VoIP. It's frustrating at times, but so liberating! I'm a see a need, fill a need kind of guy, so I often end up in all kinds of roles like project management, team leadership, sales, technology evangelism, or just plain administrative management.
My wife is the community person: adult and child education, team formation and group dynamics. We have 2 kids (4 and 8), she's been mostly at home with them lately, but ready to plunge back to work.

Meanwhile, one of the parties in Hungary gained unrestricted power and control in the government, the parliament, and in the municipalities. They are bringing it to my attention in no uncertain terms how unwelcome we are.

I have also read the page which Abdel posted on 2010-04-16 09:05:02.  Sad to say, my occupation is not on that list... I also tried a few job agencies in Vancouver but they either not reply me, or tell me that I need a PR status to apply for a job there...

I want to try applying through the Quebec/Montreal system as a French speaker and I have even taken up French...
