Visa for expat in Cambodia

New rule of immigration is required us to go another place then return to Cambodia to got a visa (if you are new) but if you are working the employer gonna handle it for you. Travel agency can handle it for you too just to add extra bucks to them, 280$ is the price for 1 year business visa if I'm not wrong.
An expat can living here as long as they want. Regards

Actually you have been given some information that is not correct.  To just expat to Cambodia and not work here is very easy.  Come into the airport and be sure and apply there fro a "Regular Visa" do not  get the tourist visa.  The cost is $35 and once in country you can go to any travel agency or most hotels and hostels can do it for you to extend your visa.  You can go as far out as 1 year for around $295 to $300 and continue to renew that visa every year based on the current setup.

That may change after the elections of 2018.

The rules have already changed, but are only enforced for certain nationalities (requirements of work permit etc.)
As a Canadian, you should have no issues, since you most probably will bring money into the country and not out of it.

We came to Cambodia and are from the U.S.  We got the ordinary visa on arrival.  Do not get a tourist visa.  We were able to then extend our visas for 1 year.  The cost was $221 each.  That is the situation for U.S. citizens.  I have heard that after the first year you will also be required to get a work permit which is another $160 per year.  I do not know if this is true or not but will find out if I stay longer than a year here.  The 1 year visa extension is also a multi entry visa so you can leave and return as many times as you like during that year.

There are so many conflicting responses to tourist visas, e-visa's etc. A work permit is required if you intend to work in Cambodia from the day you intend to work and has nothing to do with a multi entry vista.

Under "GUIDE" the is a section for VISA, Work Permit and related however the moderators of this website could up-date it frequently perhaps.

After 1 year if you want to stay in this country for another year it will require a work permit whether you decide to work or not.  This country is one of the most non transparent governments in the world.  We are only stating what we have experienced recently not what was happening a few months ago.

Visa / Multi-Entry Visa vs. Work Permit

The truth of the matter is that neither is related even so one believes that a multi-entry visa is a “kind” of a work permit. As I am dealing with a number of cases relating to the above, perhaps I can provide some clarifications. 1/ tourist visa valued for 1 month and are not renewable. 2/ business visa valued up to 12 months and renewable (at the airport you will get a 1 month business visa) , 6 and 12 months business visa will give you a status of re-entry. The business visa is easily obtainable via a travel agent at a moderate fee, the total for 12 months re-entry visa will be below USD 300.-.

If you intend to work in Cambodia, you will need a work permit, the cost is USD 160. - But can change and, depending on the agent you are using you might be paying some agency fee, quite low, actually the employer is to arrange for the WP at no extra costs.

Many expats believe that Cambodia is disorganized, which in a way might be true, however rules and regulations are being put in place and will be enforced, so if you don't want to get in trouble, better start getting your permits in order, still quite easy but will soon become more difficult and for sure more expensive.

There is a lot of scaremongering going on currently in regards to the work permit, the officials themselves are confused, which in turn is causing confusion amongst the https://www.expat.community, and the media and 'fixers' are only adding to this scaremongering.

Currently...Unless you are engaged in paid employment, or own a business, in Cambodia, then there is no requirement to have a work permit. In order to apply for a work permit you must have a letter from your employer or a business license, therefore if you have neither, you are not entitled to a work permit.

Get a 1 month E-Type (Ordinary) visa on arrival, and then have it extended for 12 months, simple. If you get a job or open a business, deal with getting a work permit then. I would suggest that before accepting any job offer, you negotiate as part of your contract that the employer is responsible to apply and pay for your WP.

You can have your visa extended via most travel agencies, guest houses, and even motorbike rental agencies (Lucky moto in Phnom Penh).

A 12 month extension will cost approximately $280, depending on where you get it done.
