Moving to Kuwait in April

Hi all!

I'm a single British female moving to Kuwait in April and looking to make friends so this blog seems the perfect way to start networking in anticipation of the big move.

I'm currently in Madrid, Spain and have been here for the last 4 years and while I love the place I'm keen to experience a new challenge and new country. Can anyone give me the DL on life in Kuwait and what folks like to do for fun. Is it easy to meet people in Kuwait? I've lived overseas (Dubai, South Korea and now Spain) so I'm aware of culture shocks but a little insight into Kuwait life would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers in advance!

You're welcome to Kuwait with open arms , regarding of life there it's very expensive and there's a few places to have fun because the country is not big , if you want to know about these places you can download Tripadvisor  application on your smart phone or visit their site http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g294 … tions.html  and check the attraction places with reviews also the restaurants.
Have a great day.

hello Drea and welcome to EB,

all your questions can be answered by reading thru the existing posts on this here forum - from where to get your hair did to when to avoid the gulf road, life as a single gal in Kuwait, what to wear, prices of commodities, amenities, services, sales, places to go, things to do etc. it is quite extensive.

also several people touched on things like medicines, prescriptions, gadgets to bring from home, voltage/wattage of electrical appliances from home etc.

so, please browse thru the topics on this forum, if you have any further queries, specific or general (preferably specific :P) please do ask and all shall be ready to assist you.

judging by the weather atm April is promising to be the beginning of Summer, so do consider that when packing for your trip.

since you already have the middle east experience fitting in here wont be such a problem - kuwait is slightly more conservative than Dubai, not as conservative as Saudi Arabia, its a good middle ground.

Thanks for your input legacy, your advice is much appreciated and very helpful! I've been scrolling through past threads and there's plenty of info out there so cheers :)

I guess I'll know definitively once I arrive lol

Hopefully it won't be too difficult to meet folks and socialise!

Cheers!

Good thing to know is all the plugs are British... so no adapters needed. Bring an extension lead... I know 2 people who have had the Kuwait extension leads melt on them (I paid more for mine in Ikea, and they work fine).

Have fun getting all the documentation ready, don't leave it until the last minute as it really does take time.

You'll need an international driving licence (which will only be valid until you get your Civil ID),

Welcome in advance dear....
Kwt is so small country to get enjoyment, but we ppl i mean .....do find our path toward the paradise

;)

You will enjoy your time here, many expat are looking for friendship as well, and we had our own activities here, like dinning out, going to desert camp during winter when weather is perfect, BPQ all winter :) watching movies in cinema....etc

also you are so close to Dubai and Bahrain, Oman, you can easily visit it during weekends, or during national holidays which is a lot :)

if you need any more information or help just ask.

Hi Drea!

Kuwait is full of expats so yes its easy to make friends here... not as many things to do here in comparison (its a small country and a lil conservative) but that means you can travel often and make plenty of time for hobbies.
The British embassy here is also very active so you can feel at home every once in a while. Its a lot more laid back than Dubai so be prepared to have a lot of free time! :D

Hi Drea!

I thought you misspelled "Dear" :P

In Kuwait I don't think making friends is a problem, it's more of keeping weirdos and peeps away.

To give credit where it's due, I'm having a blast ever since I got to know of xLog (i.e. expat-blog) :D

Yea like I said making friends is easy!
and with your user name - @justfedup I'm glad your having a blast :)
Cheers!!

Perfect! to be honest Im looking forward to having more free time as I currently work a lot so having the time to socialise and try new hobbies will be great.

Thanks so much for the input people, Kuwait isnt looking so bad!

It isn't a bad place dear...but hey its an Arab world so they are little restrictions as regard to Islamic laws. No bikini...lol

he's really not fed up; its just a ruse :P

or he is fed up of all the phonies that come along on this 'ere blog in an effort to appeal to the opposite sex :S

lol Legacy, like the lady that keeps contacting me to find if I'm single and want to make friends.

exactly Kevan; i'm sorry - its promulgated by Westerners in the Far East and made famous by the phrase "Me-love-you-long-time".

like moths to a flame, all we can do is apologize for their actions and hope they do not deter you from giving the excellent advice you always do on the forum.

keep up the great work!

Plus in her defense you do look like you have a bit of "phantom of the opera" going on in your pic :P
excuse the crazy, its the weekend, we survived the blackout  :dumbom:

Hi,

If you are coming from Spain then definitely you will not like living in Kuwait. Kuwait living is the opposite of Spain living !

Fortunately Im open minded Moo! ;)

I've lived in Dubai and South Korea too and ok Kuwait seems small and is a dry country but I'll make my own fun! Lol

If you are really open mind then you will enjoy :)

Nah, if you are open minded then you will give an honest attempt of enjoying it, but the chances are high that your mind will shut its doors after a while. :-/

good you brought up the words "open minded".

a lot of people claim to understand what "open minded" means, i get you understand it properly, in that you can be thrown in any situation and land on your feet, you have a background in living in the middle east having stayed in dubai, you are ready for kuwait. its like halfway between saudi and dubai, not as free as the latter, but not as strict as the former.

however, please be cautious of saying "open minded" as most people (ok, men), most men you will meet here will take "open minded" to mean something else entirely, u follow?

i love your attitude; in the end Kuwait is what you make it - you have a small country with people from all around the world, its like a sample of New York (ok, maybe not New York but you get what i mean).

FFS wikileaks reports stated that the wildest parties took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia! so just going by the fact that kuwait is "dry" or "conservative" is a moot point entirely.

in the end you will be responsible for your own enjoyment. i came back to kuwait for work after having grown up here, it was different and boring sans my school friends, then i discovered blogs, and one thing to lead to another, i read up on parties, events, gatherings, sports, i partook in Rugby and Gaelic Football (traveled to Dubai to represent Kuwait in a tournament for the latter) and running, i write for a magazine, i blog, and i've tried my hand 4 times at stand up comedy.

do not be discouraged by those that say you will lose your mind in kuwiat, you might just find yourself here :)

and that concludes our heart-felt post for the week.

Arrivederci ;)

Re open--open minded

It means you are unprejudiced. Open to new ideas.

It does not mean you will always land on your feet.

Hope this helps.
