Tree surgery/arborist - need for professional tree care ?

Hi everyone.

We (myself, my wife and 3 year old daughter) are currently living in South Africa, and we are thinking of moving to DR for a year or so.

I have my own business here in Cape Town as an arborist/tree specialist.

1) Are there any tree surgery/arborist companies there anybody knows of?
2) Would that be a need for professional tree care, especially within the expat circles?

Thanks in advance.

First welcome to the forums.   Wow Cape Town to DR.............  that would be interesting.  Tree surgery  companies -  never heard of one.  Do we need it -  not likely.  I can get a pretty knowledgeable local guy to do what is needed for very very little money. Not sure you would have a niche here.

wravenant  welcome to the forum.

I know of no tree surgery/arborist companies here in the DR.  Those who have large yards or yards hire local Dominican or Haitian gardeners.  I fear there would not be a big demand for your services and certainly not enough to maintain a lifestyle here.

Good luck in your search.

Before moving here you need to come for an extended visit (not at a resort) and see if he DR fits  you and your family. It certainly is not for everyone.

Thank you very much Planner and Bob K, your replies are much appreciated.

I am also an adventurer, diver, and mountaineer/rock climber.
My wife is busy finishing up a medical coding course that would enable her to earn $ remotely, so that would help contribute.

The idea is to come for a few months and see how we like it for sure.  Possibly I am looking at doing my Dive Master course there in the extended visit time.  From my research I have also gathered that there is extremely good rock climbing potential, so the initial visit would be geared towards adventure based activities, and then we will, if we like it, create a long term plan.

It is good to know about the lack of tree surgeons.  We have a similar situation here in Cape Town, as labour is extremely cheap, and out niche market is very small.

We have a household set up in South Africa, so we are ultimately looking for a place to go to for 6 months of every year, possibly longer.  Being a South African (wife is US Citizen), it is hard to find places that are inviting, especially if it comes to visa regulations, and do far DR (in my research anyway) does not seem to be too much of an hassle.

That's another whole topic right there regarding which countries have lax visa regulations. You can basically stay as long as you want. The longer you stay the more money you pay in exit fees :) It's not that much in fees and you don't have to spend a second on visa paperwork :) Gotta love it!

Dreamtime those times are ending.  The gov't is cracking down on people overstaying. That being said, we hear rumors of extended visit visas but we have seen nothing yet.

Hi wravenant,

Welcome to expat-blog!

I created a new thread from your posts on the Dominican republic forum along with some feedbacks you had (planner, Bob K, dreamtime).

You will be more likely to gather informations on this thread.

Best of luck,

Treepro Welcome to the forum.

The OP was looking to work in the Dominican Republic, and this is the Dominican Republic forum, not California or the USA.

Maybe you should contact the OP directly.
