Healthcare in Vanuatu

Hi,

how does the healthcare system work in Vanuatu ? Is it efficient ?

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?

Is it recommended to purchase private health insurance in Vanuatu?

If you are coming over as a tourist, it's imperative you have medical insurance. If you intend living in Vana's, it's extremely advisable to have an insurance that covers medi-vac, god forbid one should need it. Port Vila hospital leaves a lot to be desired, but if one is in dire straights, it's better than nothing.....I guess. There is a private hospital (old and run down) manned by ex-pat doctors. A night or two in there is all you would want.

Best advice is take out insurance with ProMedical,they have a web site and are really great

The biggest threat is tropical ulcers so buy some Bactroban as soon as you get there and keep any scratches/minor cuts covered it is the Tropics after all
I have been 7times as we have a house there and you would be amazed how quickly an uncovered minor cut will get infected.

Yes, tropical ulcers are the bane of expats life in Vanuatu. Hubby suffered with  them very badly for the first year, mainly scratches/cuts below the knees and hands. We are not absolutely certain on this, but we wonder if they get infected so quicky by the flies. Within seconds of a scratch, flies are on it. So it's imperative to dress these immediately. By the second year (for him, anyway) most scratches didn't turn to ulcers.In hindsight, maybe that is due to him covering an injury immediately . Or maybe one gets immune, or something similar. Our Ni Van workers rarely get tropical ulcers, and they are bare foot, most of the time.
