Everyday life in Tallinn

Hello, expat community: I'm getting ready to move to Tallinn to study at the Estonian Academy of Arts, and I'm looking to absorb as much information as I can before arriving in late August.  Any advice on dressing for winter, finding a place to live, and even finding small jobs at bars, restaurants, or offices?  I've only mastered about three phrases in Estonian, so I am confined by language abilities.  Will poke around the site.

Hey girlnothere,

For winter clothes, I would suggest buying good heavy clothes in the US because they tend to cost less than here in Tallinn..

I don't know much Estonian language either, and haven't found it critical in the metro areas; burbs and country towns are a different story, but there are some useful free language apps these days..

For renting an apartment, here are a few links i googled, in English for your convenience :
City24 (http://www.city24.ee/;jsessionid=1B4CE4 … mp;lang=en)

ApartmentsTallinn (http://www.apartmentstallinn.com/)

Ites Apartments (http://www.ites.ee/index.php?page=3&)

The Estonian embassy in your area should also be helpful, as well as the US embassy in Tallinn (http://estonia.usembassy.gov/). I highly recommend you start processing your documents well in advance of coming over - some US certificates might need to be apostilled to be accepted here for living permits.. Also checkout the government-sponsored site (https://www.eesti.ee/eng).

Since you're attending the Estonian Academy of Arts, they should also have someone who can help you with all your relocation logistics.. when I was in college in the US, we had an ISO - International Students Organization.. very helpful.. perhaps a college in your area has an ISO chapter that could help you, even though you're not enrolled in your local college..?

Hope this helps..

Hello girlnothere,

A new thread has been created from your post on the Tallinn forum.

Make sure you have the legal right to work before getting a job.  If you work on the sly and get caught, you can have your visa cancelled and be deported as well as face a ban from the EU for 5 years.  This isn't America.  Local officials can be rather strict in carrying out their duties.
