Do and don't in Mongolia

Are you living in Mongolia? We need you to share your experience of the local customs smile

Is it difficult to adjust to the local customs in Mongolia?

Could you please share with us a list of the do's and don't's in Mongolia?

Thanks!

Re: Do and don't in Mongolia

1)Do keep your temper if things go wrong. Mongolians are used to a hard life and a lot of poverty so they dont particularly care if a fly lands in you soup.
2)Do be carefull what you take for granted, life is different here and what your see is not what it appears.
3)My experience is that Mongolians are accutely aware of the genral level of poverty in the country, dont make them more self conciuous by displaying your wealth. But if you have to bring out your GPS, Camera or mobile phone share it with your companions
4) Pickpocketing is a national pasttime, dont relax your guard on your wallet
5) Mongolians have a huge interest in the rest of the world, do ask them if they would like to hear about your country.
6) Dont waste ANY food, or water, naw that bone you have been given like your life depends on it. In fact it does. I made the mistake once of chewing most of the meat off the choulderblade and then puttin the bone down, immediately 2 of the ladies with me swooped on it and polished it off. Mongolians eat heads and hooves so you can imagine the value placed on the best cut of meat.
7) Dont expect to eat lamb, do expect to eat mutton.
8) Do carry small gifts to give away to several hosts your visit during the day. The cost begins to mount up.
9) Many Mongolians are talented in English, let them exercise on you and in reeturn say one or two mongolian words to show them your making an effort.
10) When walking or sitting in the company of girls they may want to link arms. Let them but dont labour under the illusion that they want to jump in bed with you, They are just friendly and keeping warm.
11) If you get ripped off for a price, either walk away in silence or give them the asking price remember as a wealthy foriegner youve made yourselve available to be ripped off by coming to their country. In time you will wise up. In the mean time boost their economy.
12) Do enjoy the uniqueness of their culture, it will give them great satisfaction. In 3 Cyms we stayed in in 3 weeks we had people come to us to "stay in Mongolia, dont go". Thats why we're going back next year to stay as long as we can manage.
13) The girls are beautiful and will boost the male ego, but remember, many of them are looking for a cheap ticket to leave the country, be very careful because you are buying serious trouble. Live in the country a few years to test their sincerity, befor you marry them. I have heard of young women marrying older guys, just to leave the country. No guy wants to feel like his only value is as a cheap meal ticket and a department store voucher.

Re: Do and don't in Mongolia

DO look where you are going at all times, so you dont trip over a loose pavement stone, fall down a hole, or stand on a dead dog.

DONT ever ask a taxi driver how much the ride was, ask how many kilometres and give him 500tugs per Km.

DO be patient and expect the unexpected

DONT underestimate the vodka....

DO visit Terelj

DONT bother going to Metropolice

DO have fun and enjoy

DONT expect water or electricity to be continuous...

Re: Do and don't in Mongolia

DO be careful not to step on anyone's feet. Apologise if you did. Its considered rude.

DO enjoy the food your host provided for you. Even if it its a goat's head on the table.

DO keep an eye on your belongings.

DO give their locally produced beers and vodka a try.

DO check out their live music pubs/bars.

DONT drink unboiled water.

DONT travel alone at night (for females)
