Am visiting Zanzibar soon and was just wondering if there was anything like a shopping plaza or mall in Zanzibar to visit to do some shopping whilst there? I got the impression it was more of a resort/hotel/cultural type of destination though but just looking for feedback from people more familiar, or those who may live there.

You can do some shopping there but don't expect anything of it. There are some (handmade) souvenirs and some clothes shops but the quality is not so good. A few hours shopping and visiting the market in Stone Town will be more than enough. You can also visit the harbor over there.
Take a bus (dala dala) to the north where the turtles are or visit Prison Island, see a fish market and visit caves. Diving, snorkling, rent a dhow and last but not least: relax! It's warm there; you might be very lazy;)
