Healthcare in Haiti

Hi,

how does the healthcare system work in Haiti ? Is it efficient ?

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?

Is it recommended to purchase private health insurance in Haiti?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience !

Julien

Public healthcare in Haiti is far from being efficient.

After the earthquake the biggest and best equipped hospital in Haiti was closed because all the high cost equipment became unusable from trying to help to many wounded people. It was owned by private doctors who invested over four million dollars in the construction. I was informed by a physician that they did not receive a dime from the international aid to reopen.

They are a few insurance companies and other private hospitals that provide health insurance. Which is good since you will have at your disposition an ambulance always ready in case of an emergency.

Doctors without borders offer great service for those in need, for free, in case of an emergency.

Purchasing private insurance would seem like throwing money away since it would only be valid at few locations which for the major part do not provide the best service. But it really depends on the type of coverage you would want.
