A National District court on Thursday ruled not to hear an appeal by a Canadian shareholder of Dream Casinos Corp. who seeks his release.
1st Appellate Court presiding judge Julio César Cano suspended the hearing on Antonio Carbone's request for bond, until the Supreme Court rules on a challenge against the judges filed by the Dream Casinos management.
Carbone was given one year pretrial detention after being indicted on attempted murder of Dream Casinos Corp. COO Fernando Baez Guerrero, with a firebomb hurled at his car last December.
The company's attorneys challenged the judge who was to hear the case, claiming that its president Eduardo Sanchez is the brother of Col. Felix Sanchez, who worked as Carbone's bodyguard.
The case was sent to the Supreme Court after Baez's lawyer challenged the 1st Appellate Court judges, with documents proving that Col. Sanchez is Judge Sanchez's brother.

It could be a coincidence or not, but it appears that Canada does not have an extradition treaty with the DR, while the USA has an extradition treaty with the DR. This article is about the Hells Angles in Cabarete. A well known fact by those of us living here. While there may not be an extradiction treaty with Canada about 3 years ago Interpol did a sweep of the area and arrested 6 or so of them and shipped them back to Canada. So it does happen.
And just last week a Canadian was arrested by Interpol in Sosua for charges back in Canada (fraud) and he was sent packing as well.
Both of the above are a reason why if you live here you need you residency. If this had been enforced none of these folks would be living here.

True, but they got caught & will not be living here ever again. Cops will get you sooner or later. About 7 years ago, several of the Angels were popped on several murder charges & taken to Canada. Some of them I knew from selling burgers & wings to them next door to "Passions". They were always polite & quiet & tipped very well. Within several months they were back eating my food again. I guess they must have been "innocent" or something. There are so many levels of justice that it is hard to know which floor you are on.
The January 2015 article in the Toronto Sun indicated that:
" According to immigration lawyer ..., criminals seek out the Dominican Republic for simple reasons.
"The cost of living is low and there is ample opportunity to take advantage of corrupt authorities," he said.
There is no bilateral extradition treaty between Canada and the Dominican Republic."
