Is my salary offer adequate?

Dear Jo, Brighton Guy, Farhaz and other who have responded to a lot of previous requests...

I would like to congratulate you all on a great job of compiling responses and threads.

I have been offered 2500 BHD as a comprehensive package in which I have to cover all my expenses. My medical insurance will be provided by the employer. Now I gathered that this is enough for survival definitely

My question is: Is it commensurate to my profession? I am an Ophthalmologist and a Vitreo-Retina Surgeon with 9 years experience. I am a doctor currently working in Africa and I make a little less than the same amount. Having said that, cost of living here in Africa is less than that in Bahrain but obviously Bahrain will have the Quality of life advantages that I can offer to my family (Wife and 1 school going child).

Request inputs A.S.A.P. I need to confirm in 1 weeks time.

Regards

Dr. Nishant,

Welcome to the forum. What position are you being offered? Is your employer the Ministry of Health or a private hospital?

For a Consultant's position, the salary is a bit low. Even for a Specialist/Chief Resident position, you can get a higher salary. As many people have said on this forum, "Never take the first offer". So, please negotiate for a higher salary.

Thanks 5hutterbug,

I have been offered 2500 inclusive of basic, home allowance, transport allowance, emergency call allowance and gratuity. Medical insurance will be covered they said. Are there any other points that I am missing or they have not quoted?

Yours was a quick and a helpful response. My employer is a pvt. Hospital. I Will consider a higher package. Would 3000 push my chances out or do you think theres a chance even with that? Or is 2750 more equivalent to current rates and possible?

Does ministry pay better than pvt? I was offered a better pay in Abudhabi nearly 3500 but the hospital was saying they will keep my passport?

Is any such clause in Bahrain as well that the employer retains the employees passport? Are there any income tax deductions in Bahrain? Help is welcome and needed once again.

Regards.

Will they pay school fees as well? as this can add up to a fair bit especially if you will put your child in one of the international schools.
You said 2500 iclusive....
Can you clarify If the BD2500 is your complete take home package including the allowances then I'd say it's very low considering I'm a teacher and getting about BD1800 total salary not including my insurances..... if it's BD2500 basic salary with the housing, car etc allowances on top then it may be fine but I'd get them to include school fees for sure

:/  Yeah !
Let me answer
Confiscation of Employees' Passports Illegal ((Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs bahrain )<click me )
Laws of Bahrain clearly saying Retaining the passport of  employee is illegal .If the employee demands his or her passport back and the employer refuses to hand it over (in writing if possible), the employee should first contact his/her embassy and, then raise an urgent case before the court of urgent matters at the Ministry of justice (diplomatic area).

:) no income tax deduction in the Kingdom ,  Companies  must pay social insurance contributions:for Non-Bahraini   1% of their basic salary towards unemployment insurance i think GOSI Insurance (google it ) , and their employers pay 3% of that salary into employment injuries insurance.]
correct me if im wrong ..

Rule number One: Never, ever, surrender your passport. Make that a non-negotiable condition of employment. As Khush420 pointed out, it is illegal in any country in the middle east for the employer to ask for employees' passport. Your passport is not your property, but is the property of the Government that issued it.

I think you need to factor in school fees in your negotiation too. As fchaudari76 said, educating your child in one of the International Schools will add a significant financial burden.

Generally speaking, Consultants at MoH are offered ~ 2600-2800 BD as basic salary. Then, they get other allowances like social allowance, transport allowance, telephone allowance, call allowance, etc.

Lastly, 1% of your salary will be deducted as social insurance.

Go for 3000 and they might meet you in the middle. No harm in trying! Schools are expensive in Bahrain but that also depends on your child's age. The older they get the higher the fees and extras get. Also if your salary includes accommodation meaning you have to pay for it out of your 2500 BD...renting a nice place can also be a burden on the salary. But that all depends on where you want to live and what kind of a lifestyle you want. Good luck!

Thanks Superwoman, Khush, shutterbug and fchaudari

Will try and negotiate that way. Is it so that pays in pvt hospitals is less than the MOH hospitals as a norm or am I not getting a proper remuneration?

May seek help for further information if needed.

:) sir you can negotiate for more a technician earn this amount here you are experienced.
