Cuernavaca-How is it??

It's an 18 hour drive from Cuernavaca to Cancun and another 8 hours from Cancun to Belize. It's not a good idea to drive at night at all, so it would be about 3 days to Cancun and another day getting into Belize. The toll roads are not bad, some of the libre roads are okay, but I would avoid them. All of the roads have rough spots, some very rough spots. Most towns have mild to unbelievable speed bumps (Tope's )which may or may not be marked, and mild to serious pot holes. There are  ruins "pryramids",  practically everywhere. Any hotel you stop at will be glad to give you a map.

Am wondering if Mexico also taxes any monies earned in the US when you become an expat there. I already know that the US will tax things like SS as well as any pension you may have earned here before you get it. But then does Mexico re-tax the money you have left over after that?? I'm sorry if I am becoming a pain to any of you but aside from contacting the Mexican embassy with these questions, I don't know who else to ask. I just hope you don't mind. Thank you!

Hi I read your message, I would advise that acudieras to the State Government, in the city where you are now, and you dirigieras to Secretary of Interior, and there inquire; what here questions, and also you can go to the Ministry of Finance I think there can give you answer.

Hi, I live in Cuernavaca and really enjoy it.  I have been here for over a year and a half.  I have never had any issues with safety although you need to be careful in any Mexican city.  I have been told that it is not safe to drive on your own at night.  Cuernavaca is a great place.  It is close to Tepoztlan, a delightful magical mexican town (approx 30 minutes away) with great markets and mountains and a pyramid.  It is one hour away from Taxco (another great town specialising in silver jewerly) and 3 hours from Acapulco.  The ex community is well connected by a social network called CuernaAds.  I have found this to be a great resource in staying connected.  The weather is perfect.  They call it the land of the eternal springs.  It is consistent all year round.  Lots of international students come here to study Spanish.  I am not sure about the job market in Cuernavaca however if you have Spanish, there is a good chance you will be sort after.  If you work for yourself as a counsellor, you will get work easily. Expats are welcomed here in Mexico.  Using job boards and Cuerna Ads will greatly assist. The cost of living seems to be ok.  Food is cheap if you buy your food at the markets and renting seems to be reasonable too. I think transport is cheap too.  A luxury bus to Mexico City will cost you approx  $190 (MXN) or $14 (US)

There are many things you can do there, classes to take, theater, cultural activities.  Your Spanish will open many doors for you.  Hope this helps.  If you have any other questions, please dont hesitate to ask.

If you have questions about taxes on US income in Mexico you probably should review the US-Mexico tax treaty (you can google it). The treaty will tell you how to determine which country you are a resident of for tax purposes, agreements on withholding amounts etc.

If you are an American citizen and are thinking of becoming a resident of Mexico (or any other country that has signed a FATCA IGA) you should seek expert advice first from a professional familiar with FATCA. You may, for instance, be unable to open a bank account in Mexico or wire US dollars from the US to Mexico.

I am a resident of Mexico for tax purposes and receive a pension from Canada. Under the tax treaty Mexico has with Canada, tax is withheld in the originating country and I have never had to pay any additional income tax on my pension in Mexico. However, as an American you face the unique situation of CBT (citizen-based taxation) so, if there is any double taxation, it would be the US, not Mexico, which is double taxing you.

If you become a tax resident of Mexico you will be taxed on your world income, excluding those things such as pensions which are covered by a tax treaty. Consult the US-Mexico tax treaty to determine in which country you will be a tax resident - you may not be a tax resident of Mexico at all and so will not have to file a return here.
