Hi Sumitran,
Is cooking gud option for better savings.?
Or some cheap food joints.
Hi mukteshmukul,
For less than R.O. 50/- you can get 3 meals a day from any small hotel / coffee shop - if you live downtown.
Cooking can also be an option.
It's entirely up to you to decide.
Good luck.
Thanks a lot for the guidance...
Hi All,
Please share the working and living conditions for expats in Muscat.
I mean, is there any racism towards expats among locals.
What are dos and donts for living a tension free life in Muscat and what are things, i have to compromise after moving there.?
Is 1500 OMR per month alright to survive + company maintained health insurance? However, Accommodation, Car, Food all on me.
Hi, since you mentioned you'll be working in Al Khuair, i've included rent in Al khuair, here's a bit of a summary of total monthly expenses:
Rent - 1 bed apartment - 300
Rent - single room in shared apt. - 150-200
Rent - room sharing basis - 80-125
Check out Dubizzle to get an idea of the rentals (keep in mind the prices quoted in dubizzle can be negotiated a little bit in real life)
Food - You can set up a deal with a local hotel to provide 2-3 meals per day for approx 45-60 OMR per month. Or if you cook yourself that too can cost around the same.
Other expenses - (you may not avail all of this, just giving you the range so you may get a better idea)
Utilities (water / elec) sometimes included in rent, otherwise approx 15-30 per month depending on single apt or sharing etc.
Internet - 25 per month
Cable - 20-35 per month
Cell phone data package - OMR 5 for 1 gb per month
Cell phone local call - 1 OMR gets you around 20-25 minutes
Gym - 25-40 per month
Travel - Al Khuair to Ruwi for instance, or Seeb City Centre (around same travel time but in opposite direction) on full taxi is approx 3 OMR (locally called engaged taxi) otherwise sharing or minivan is also available for 0.3 to 0.5 OMR per one way trip.
In addition, as monthly budgeting advice, you should also keep an extra amount, say 30-50 OMR as misc. expenses that you might need to occur for random or extraordinary items (better to plan ahead for one off things rather than worry about it when it arises!)
Regarding your query on the attitude of locals towards expats, well, to be honest, there is some element of biasness, but you shouldn't judge everyone on the basis of a few bad examples. I've travelled through other gulf countries as well and found the Omani people to be the friendliest and most cooperative locals in the region. (compared to Saudi, Kuwaiti, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan etc. Don't know about UAE though, i don't think they even have locals there lol).
Hope that helps.
