Manufacturing

Hi

Im currently doing an nvq apprenticeship in manufacturing. It contains a broad range of manufacturing processes such as silicone mould making, assembly, fabric cutting and sewing and much more.

Is the manufacturing industry in iceland big or relatively small?

Many thanks

There are very few manufacturing plants on any sort of large scale here, partly because labor is expensive. The two industries that come to mind are fish processing, and aluminum smelting. There is one other plant that's doing something to do with alloys but nothing else is coming to mind.

Ok thanks. Hopefully someone else will also chime in

You do realize this place has a small population, just above 300k, and is disadvantageously situated for export, right? There is some clothing manufacture with local wool, but it's not on a vast scale (see http://www.icewear.is)

There are some large Iceland based brands like 66 north and cintamani, but they don't actually produce the goods here.

How about ossur?

Given the address of their Icelandic headquarters, it's possible they do some. Why not email them an inquiry? It's definitely not on a massive scale based on my knowledge of that part of Reykjavik, but I have no contacts at the company.
