New members of the Cambodia forum, introduce yourself here

hello there,

Julien - I feel instantly welcome! Thank you, and everyone on here, Sincerely!!

HELLO ALL! My name is Glenn and I will turn 50 years of age in October.  I wish to move to Cambodia and live there. I have been at my current employ for thirty years and am almost positive that I will be applying for an early retirement sometime in the next few months.  An early retirement in my case means that I will loose about $1000.00 a month in income but from what I have read about the cost of living I think I'll be just fine.  I am a musician, and the one possession I wish to bring with me is my acoustic guitar (I hope the humidity doesn't cause it to implode!).  It would be wonderful if I could have the chance of performing on occasion - not for a salary mind you, simply as a gesture of joyous cultural exchange.  I would also love to volunteer in any number of areas so that I can help the community. From what I have read thus far I am initially setting my sights on Siem Reap, however if anyone would like to suggest another location I would love to have their input.

*Can anyone tell me if my U.S. municipal govt. retirement benefits are easily transferrable to Cambodia?

Thank you all!  The new guy already feels very welcome!  -Gln

Hello All. I moved to Siem Reap about 2 months ago after working for 6 years in Indonesia. So far I am enjoying it,although that said, I am used to a much busier Indonesia, and sometimes find it a little too quite here- I'm sure I'll get used to it...!  I'm a high school teacher btw :) Best wishes!!

Hello May Park -

My name is Glenn and I want to relocate to Siem Reap in the next several months.  Do you think I would be fine making the move and simply stay at guest houses while I look for for a long term lease?  I have never been to Cambodia personally, but hours and hours of research convinces me this is where I wish to "retire".

Do you think it important that the apartment / villa that I eventually choose have a generator for power outages?

I hope you don't mind my questions!  Thank you so much for your time!
Glenn

Hi,

I will be moving to Phnom Penh mid October, don't really know a soul in the city so I'm hoping to find some guidance here.

where are you from?

I'm originally from California but I'm moving to PP from Madison, Wi, which is where I go to grad school.

and you like to live permanently in Cambodia ?

Hi,
We have had a few visits to Siem Reap and will be moving there on the 4th of December. There will be my partner and I and her 29 year old daughter. We would be happy to be a contact on the ground if SR is your destination. We have some great friends who are living there and they may be good contacts to get you started. They work with several villages etc.
We currently live near sydney but would be happy to keep in touch by email etc.
Regards Barb and Chris

Hi Barb and Chris,

good luck with your move. Im moving to PP in November and been lucky enough to have a job and flat lined up.

I've ready your posts in the SR forum and the sorts of things you're hoping to get into in SR.

It might be worth getting with touch with Cassie and Lauren at Sister Srey Cafe near the old market in SR. They're a couple of Melbourne girls who have started the business and a couple of great community projects involving education / youth. I didn't know they existed when I was in SR recently but it sounds like a great project. they're also on Facebook.

Hope all goes well for you :-)

Kind regards,

Dale

Hello everyone. :)  My name is Mat and i am hoping to relocate to Phnom Penh in March of 2015.  I have done a fairly large amount of reading and research and i am beyond excited to go there.  I am 21 years olds and i am just looking for something new, exciting and different in my life.  I dont have much experience abroad except for a month spent in Colombia.  Anyway, i don't know anyone on in PP yet so i'm really looking forward to meeting some new people! Feel free to send me a message if you want to meet up when i get there!

Thanks

Hi everyone!

I am kind of new.  I moved here from Korea about a month ago with my sausage dog, Charley.  My boyfriend will be joining me in about a month or so.

I teach at St. George's International School and would REALLY like to meet people to play volleyball or soccer on evenings or weekends.

Nice to meet you all (sort of), and maybe see you around!

Aloha from Vegas!!

Just signed up after reading some of the comments on various topics that offered some good advices to those needing help and got good vibes overall from most of the members here posting their comments.  Overall, this group seems pretty friendly and helpful to those needing info about living in cambodia so i decided to join you guys because i plan to move to sihanouk next june 2015.  i know it's not a good time to move weather wise but it's the earliest time i can get out of vegas after being here for over 14 yrs and lived in reno area before that for 10 yrs.  i guess you can consider me a burnt out pit boss and the vegas 'glittler' , glitters no more for me.  all i see now are people trying to get free comps for food and room for a $100 buy in and expects to be treated like a high roller using their $10 match play coupons to boot and then asking for a $2 blackjack game.  right now, finding a dry spot in a monsoon really doesn't sound that bad to me in which i know i will be getting a lot of it as well as being in a highy humid environment.  Lived in thailand and florida so i'm going to have to grin and bear it again until i get used to it.  One reason why i picked sihanoukville because it's on the coast which helps out a lot versus being inland where it's really miserable.  this leads me to my question to you all,  i read both good things and bad things about sihanoukville.  the bad part is crime which i know is all over but can anyone tell me specific areas to avoid as well as areas to find a place to live with plenty of transportation accessible (i don't plan on buying a car and i don't know how to ride a bike, going to have to rely on the good old 'footmobile' to get around).  appreciate any info from you 'old timers' there and hope to meet up with some of you when i arrive there.  booked a bungalow for 30 days at sakal bugalow and bar.  read good and bad reviews about that place but seemed like a good area to start off at for the price.  if you think otherwise, would appreciate to know of a better place for the same price range.

also, its close to that queenco casino which i plan to get check out and see if they may need someone to teach blackjack or other games they have there.  i'm more of a craps dealer but i know most of the games.  anyone familiar with that casino who can give me more info about that place would be a great help to me in sizing up that place.  it seems small to me from the videos i could find on that place.

in return, if you wish to know more about vegas or planning to visit here soon, be glad to provide you info about vegas and what currently happening here.  lots of changes going on here especially in the last 5 years.

thanks for reading this and a thank you in advance on any info you can provide me with about sihanoukville and any other info you think would be helpful for me.  coming there cold and not knowing a sole there which sounds crazy but i came to vegas the same way and manage to make it and i have cambodian friends here as well as thai friends here and in thailand too.  i have a great deal of respect for southeast asians in general and their customs are similar to mine as well so i look forward in making new friends there.

aloha

Hello Everyone!

My name is Roy and I am thrilled to have found this website - so many nice people and a lot great information here.

I am from Vancouver, Canada and will arrive in Cambodia (PP) on Oct 1, 2014.  I was in SR/PP last year and really loved it, so I am spending a couple of months to see if I might like living in Cambodia - I hope to spend some extended time here in the future.

I am a computer/telecom engineer but also have another career as a travel photographer/writer.  I am on my own and looking forward to meeting others in Cambodia.  Will be in PP until Oct 8th, then after that, I will wander around the country.

I hope to meet a few of you during my stay in Cambodia.

All the best,
Roy
