My boyfriend's working visa is expiring soon and I would like to know what options there are to extend his stay on Malta once the visa expires. His nationality is American.

Apply for single permit (work+residence)
Apply for residence permit as student

Residence permit as a partner of an EU citizen only works if both partners have been legally resident in Malta for more than 2 years at the same address ( living together with both names on the rental contract for 2 years)
A residence permit as a student for a TCN means leaving Malta after studies.
That only really leaves getting a work permit (visa) for 2 years or getting married.
