I've been in Madang now for 6 months when I joined my wife here (also Dutch) since november. She has a job at IMR in Yagaum. I'm looking for an interesting job, preferably related to my background which is biotechnology (mainly wastewater, wastewater treatment, sustainability, energy).

Usually you can find me on wednesdays at the Yacht club and on Friday at the Country Club (also on Monday when playing squash.

That amounts to $1600 a month. Not much at all.

Also, take into account the phenomenal rate of the Kina at the moment (yes, that is sarcasm). We've seen our income compared to our home country (NL) drop with at least 25%. With still responsibilities and no pension built up (so we need to save money) this quite hurts.
I recommend to negotiate a higher salary and include some recompense depending on Kina rates.
Not sure if it is an australian firm, but as far as I've seen are australian wages slightly higher than this 4000K (of course an australian employer would not pay for your house, on the other hand, you don't have the hardship of living in one of the most undeveloped countries in the world).
It also depends where you are based, in Madang (where we live) you can get a beer for as cheap as 6K, in Lae it is likely 8 and POM probably 10.

Me and my husband have just moved in to PNG, POM.
While we are getting used to live here, there is a feeling that we are lacking social circles.
Are there any social events happening in town?
We've been to Aviat, but people there seem to enjoy their own companies. In any case, if someone interested in making friends with a young international couple, please let me know. Would be happy to make this place more cosy with new friends.

Hi everyone, my wife and I just arrived in PNG in July, 2014 from Missouri, USA. We're working for City Mission, A Christian NGO in Port Moresby, giving at risk youth a chance for education, vocational training and a chance for life apoart from poverty and crime.  I also oversee Meris Seif Haus, Women's shelter and hostel. We would be glad to visit with anyone, especially Americans.

We've been in Port Moresby 1 month.  I live outside of town, but drive into PM almost everyday to work and shop. We have settled in very well, and while remaining diligent in regards to watching our surroundings and avoiding rough areas we have found it easy to get around and have enjoyed the several shopping areas, including a Vision City Mega Mall.  Food is expensive, but with all of the warnings about danger, we have started to relax a bit and enjoy the town. for the most part the PNG people are friendly and enjoy being recognized with a smile or hello.  Better plan on spending a LOT for housing unless your company provides it. Fuel is 3.70 Kina a liter or around $6.50 US a gallon. So far my wife and I are enjoying it.  Listen to the advice, avoid certain areas, try not to travel after dark and stay alert.

Hi I have an offer to work as an Accountant in Anitua Ltd in Lihir Island. I want to know if it is a good company to work? I want to know if USD3100 per month net of tax with free accomodation and meals is fair enough. I also want to know if it safe to work there? And if I can bring cereal, coffee and milk when I go there?  I already have my visa approved and I am just waiting for the POEA documents to be approve. Appreciate your reply..thank you

We've been in PNG a little over 2 months now, so I offer a Newcomer's opinion.

Typically a company will offer housing, utilities, phone, car and fuel, plus a salary package.

We were initially a little nervous about getting around because of all the bad publicity. PNG can be dangerous for sure, but after 2 months we have settled in.  There is plenty of shopping, some nice grocery stores and mini-malls and the Vision city Mall with food court that is nice. There are also a couple of modern movie theaters. We have never had any problems in these places.  There are certainly places you do not want to go, but you generally don't need to go to those places anyway.  There are also some good restaurants.  Lunches are typically around 20-30 Kina ($8-$12 USD), nice buffet $35 USD.

The cost of living is pretty high here.   We pay 1 -2 times more for food than in the USA.  Other consumer goods are 2-3 times the USA price.  However with a furnished apartment, car and fuel, the only thing you will need are personal items and additional comfort or luxury items you don't bring. 

My wife and I spend about $600 USD a month in grocery and personal items. 

Internet and phone are high,unless it comes with your housing package.  To buy Data for 3G cellular is 65 Kina (about $27 USD) for 900 MB.  You can usually get a second 900 MB for 1/2 price if you buy it the same day.

Do anticipate some frustrating times trying to set up bank accounts and other service oriented services.  Plan on spending an hour or more just to go to the bank.  Things move at a much slower pace in PNG.

Overall my wife and I love being in PNG, Listen to the expats and locals you work with, avoid being out after dark when possible and know where you can go and you should have a decent experience here.  If you get the Port Moresby try to contact us. I work for a Christian NGO - City MIssion.

Hi all,

Just accepted a 3yr term in Port Moresby, so will be moving over later this year and bringing my wife and 2 young daughters over early next year. Fairly excited, I have travelled and worked overseas, but nothing like PNG. We visited POM this weekend to check everything out and had a great time, so we are looking forward to our new adventure.

I suggest you check out www.seek.com.au  as there are often PNG jobs advertised there.
A Google search for say, civil construction jobs png and see what comes up. 

There is a lot of building work going on in Moresby at present. Even do another Google search for construction companies png and check them out. Fletchers may be one to try or Curtain brothers. Placements International.
