Tips for Singapore

Dear friends,

We are a couple and we would like to move to South East Asia, potentially to Singapore. First thing is we need to find a job, of course. We are both highly qualified (MBA) with over 10 years of working experience. We both work in Finance for big companies (not financial companies).

Does anyone have a hint? Where should we direct ourselves to find a job?

Thanks!

Hi Vitasloma,

Welcome to the forum.
To move to Singapore, as you have said, you need a job first, because the employer will apply for your work visa.
Finding a job as a foreigner has become more and more difficult in recent years (kind of similar the EU), and will get harder still from 1. Aug., when all vacancies have to be listed on a Singaporeans-only website for two weeks first and foreigners can only be hired if no suitable local applies.
That said, the key to find something is networking and connections. Start with contacting people you know in Singapore, and companies you currently deal with who have offices there. When you are in Singapore, visit relevant trade associations and attend professional events as much as possible. Linkedin is also an excellent way to get to know people.
In your applications, focus on your skills that are rare (but in demand) in Singapore. That's the best way to clear the locals-preferred regulations!
Finance is one of the best-paid professions in Singapore, but unless you are sent as by a foreign company on a comfortable Expat package (which are becoming rare), you cannot expect a similar pay as in Europe - although taxes and deductions are also much lower. You can google salary surveys (published by several major consultancies and headhunters) to see what you might be worth.
Please also note that, depending on your lifestyle, expenses will be considerably higher in Singapore than Europe.
