Dear Fellow Singaporeans,

Hi Max,

Yes, I am aware of the thread timeline. The most recent post was a couple of days ago, so I thought I might as well hang around.

Thanks for the headsup anyway.

Cheers!

Sayem
Welcome to Expat.com.
Could you please introduce yourself and give us some information about why you want to go to Canada, what qualifications and experience you have, what sort of work you are looking for.

I am a Singaporean Occupational Therapist student currently studying in Australia. Have any Singaporean healthcare students studied in an university in UK, USA and Australia before migrating over to Canada ? Can anyone give me advice on how to plan my migration to Canada ? How do I take the Canadian English Test ? How do I apply for temporary working visa in Canada ?

Hi all.

First and foremost, you should engage a migration specialist and have them make an assessment for your pre-application. I had mine done 10 yrs ago and application took 3-4 yrs. Been in Canada since 2008.

For starters, check out the following:

Please note I am in no way related to the above-mentioned. Just trying to give you a head start.

G'day,

See my reply to elisabethserene. Talk to a migration specialist first and take it from there. You can't just apply for a temporary work visa. The CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) is very stringent when it comes to such matters.

I'm moving to Toronto from Singapore. What is the best/cheapest international mover in Singapore? I asked for a quotation from Astro-movers for shipping 1 cubic meter of box (of clothes, desktop, etc) from SG to CA, they told me it costs 1700SGD without the insurance. Is it really that expensive provided that it is a ground(sea) shipping?

i have checked with another mover and they charge $4200 for 3cubic metres but that's to calgary

I did not traveled from Canada to Singapore. But I traveled to Singapore from Bangladesh. I will recommend singapore airlines. Awesome service and Comfortable journey provided by them. Cures are very smart, helpful, and decent in behavior.

The rates are pretty standard when I was enquiring them(http://www.helutrans.com) back in 2008. The difference is primarily the level of service provided. Mine had 2 packers + 1 team leader that showed up my place. One thing is YOU NEED to eyeball is they have a tendency to pack 3/4 full then stuffed the rest with papers and peanuts, this increases the volume for the entire shipment. I had to literally supervise them carton by carton else I would be paying more(20% more, eg) if I let them do the packing.

Can't recall how many CM my shipment was but I paid close to $5k due to my wife and kids barang barang.

Cheers!

All sea freight will be transit in Vancouver, BC then by ground to Calgary or Edmonton.

Hi,

I am interested to move to Canada. How to proceed for that? Any advise from where to start?

Thanks,

Hi,

You need to speak to an immigration specialist to have a pre-application assessment done first.

Hi All, my family is planning to move in June 2015.  Nice to know that we can get some advice from experienced people here.

I may not know a lot about this place yet but if anyone is interested in coming to Toronto and needed help, just let me know and I will try to help as much as I can.
Best regards to all

Hi Toronto,  My grandmother, uncle (including Uncles in law) are in Toronto and Mississauga.  My dad is working in Edmonton.  My family wants to move to Mississauga but the consulate in Singapore isn't exactly very helpful.  Can you advice where we need to start off?  Martin

limmartin>> is your dad a PR/Citizen? U might want to check out the provincial nomination programmes for alberta, ontario to see if they have family programmes that allows u to apply for.

I think alberta nomination family programme is closed for now since 2010. I have applied through there and have recently gotten my pr after a good 4 years plus wait.

Other provinces that do have Provincial Nominee programs can be applied to. Of course, there will be a question in their application that ask the applicant which province they intend to settle when they get the PR. Do be smart and answer that province itself. Once you get your nomination, and then PR, you are not bounded to settle in the province that nominated you.

Hi Kaisin, thank you.  I will have to ask my dad about this then. I am setting up a business with a local partner in Mississauga and will be employed by my Singapore office to be an expat there though.  Thanks again. Limmartin

Hi everyone  :top:  :

I am Mavis, 26 yrs old, currently working in the healthcare industry in Singapore. I am currently looking at the possibilities of going over to Vancouver. *Canada is beautiful!*  I have already submitted my application for registration into the licensing board. I understand that it is going to be a long, tedious wait till I get it. Hence, I wish to minimize time waste & hope to do all the right steps to getting to work there one day.

I hope to find friends who can advise me on what are the current policies in place with regards to the recruitment of international workers? What is my next step to take & how can I (try to) expedite the whole process? Is it possible to do everything by myself or is it better to engage an experienced agent to help me with it?

Thank you & nice seeing so many like-minded friends here... Cheers to our future!  :D

@Mavis,

I am Malaysian based in Halifax, NS. I recommend that you use the services of an immigration lawyer. My experience with applying on my own is that there is always a chance that you might miss something and thus have your application rejected. You wouldn't want that to happen after having to wait for a long 8 mths of the application process. I could recommend the immigration lawyer that I use. If you are interested, do PM me.

Philipyeo, did you apply inland. Maybe that's the reason why it took 8months? I think now processing time for family and economy class is at 35months and that is for the current batch of applicants. I know of people who applied inland, that got everything done in 10months.

For me, It took a whopping close to 5 years (provincial and federal), the wait is horrendous and hopefully it's worth it. Finally moving in November

I did 2 applications. Both within Canada. The first went sideways midway (8 mths through) because of a little some interpretation of their instructions. Had I have second eye from an immigration lawyer, he or she would have advice properly. My second application right now is through provincial nomination and definitely using a lawyer this time round.

Yes

Hi all,

After my application lodged in 2010, I got my PR in late 2012 and in Feb 2013 moved from Singapore. I was lucky enough to live in 3 province for the past 1 year. Currently working and living in Richmond, BC.

Don't get me wrong, but living in Canada is not easy..especially in finding jobs (esp. job in line with your qualifications and experiences). People only know that Canada is beautiful..but as newly landed immigrant, we must start everything from zero and climb up. Really tough!.

Choosing location (province) is also important. Favorite province like Ontario and/or BC is very "saturated" and lots of people had difficulties finding jobs there (as lots of people went there!). Cost of living is not cheap as well in those province. GST will hover around 12 to 13%. Insurance (auto and health) is a killer I'd say - even its more than your car installment!. For food, it depends. I found it cheaper in BC compared to Ontario or Alberta..probably because lots of chinese restaurant so the competition is stiff.

Irrespective whatever degree, qualifications and work experience you got, Canada only interested to know your if you got "Canadian Experience"...You gotta work yourself to obtain the Canadian qualifications and then work to get the experience. So its important to get it for your career. If you clinched your job (in line with your qualification), you will find it easier to job hop. A little bit of my self. My background is accounting, had my ACCA and CPA (Singapore) with 14 years experience. I was LUCKY and managed to get CGA (one of Canadian qualification in accounting) before I migrated. Even with that, I was un-employed for 6 months in Toronto..but LUCKily, I got  a job (in line with qualification) in Alberta and moved again to another job BC (until now).

About immigration law (PR related) I heard that Canada is going to implement EOI (Express of Interest) in 2015 but I am not very sure about the scheme.

I'm happy to share more about Canada and good luck to all applicant.

Hi Boedi Hendra,

Thanks for sharing your experience. For what its worth I will share a lil bit of mine too.

I agree the fact that you will have to take a step back in most cases. But lucky for me I simply started from where I left as my skill sets were rare to come by and so I had more bargaining power. It all depends on your area of speciality.

I came over 5 years ago to do my PhD in computer science. I already had a decade of working experience prior. I just started a job early last year here in Halifax, NS. I figured its not worth while to pursue my "ivory tower" endeavour (in which financial rewards would only trickle in much later which I had no patience for already) so I headed back to work. While most of my peers back home are already managers or senior managers, I started off at Senior level - which was just where I left off when I came here.

Been in Halifax for half decade now and love this province (Nova Scotia). Although if I ever had a need to move, my first choice would be Ottawa. I am into the small-medium sized cities. Having lived in Kuala Lumpur for most of my life and also seen how Singapore is like (some of my in-laws are from there), I sure do not envy those to live in major sized cities.

However, there are downsides to living in smaller sized cities:
1) There aren't as many folks from where you are (you can hardly find any Singaporeans or Malaysians). And if you do, they are either students or married to a local.
2) Higher taxes. GST in NS is 15%. Personal provincial income tax is also higher. I forgot but I know its way higher.
3) Wages are lower. Depending on the job, you'd take about 10-20% as compared to your peers working in Calgary

Upside is:
1) Peaceful living. Road congestions are rare to come by. Getting to office from suburbs to downtown isn't as crazy as the likes of Toronto.
2) Cost of home ownership is lower. And if you want, you can still afford a 1000sq feet condo in downtown for a not ridiculous price.

Phillip,

You are lucky as you had "Canadian Experience" - as you are studying in Canada (so Canadian really consider your study) :)

Agree with housing...and heard NS is beautiful...hope I got a chance to go there. Care to share your number privately so we can have a chat? Perhaps we could meet if I have a business meeting there..

How can I go canada
