A country of contrasts- large intimate cities such as Vienna or Salzburg, mountains, prairie, rolling hills. Depends where you are based. Architecture in Vienna is stunning with Jugendstil too. Excellent transport systems. Underground is good, but if you want to catch the atmosphere of the city, go by tram! Busses too, all linked together. You can buy tourist cards for three days or more to get free transport throughout the inner city, and discounts into museums, art galleries etc., which are also magnificent. Same in Salzburg, which has busses and electric trolley busses, which are available on a similar ticket. Take the train if you are moving round Austria, to watch the magnificent scenery slide past. Highly recommend the train journey from Vienna to Graz, via the Semmering pass. Graz too is a lovely city with a hint of Italian flare. The trip from Graz to Salzburg is also wonderful, especially the last 50 kms, where another narrow alpine pass is traversed into a town called Bischofshofen. Loads of lakes, including Hallstadt. I could go on and on...
