Living here is cheaper than in Europe, but I don't know how much! 
1 USD is around 20.000VND and 1EURO 30.000VND (aprox)

The food is cheap (and very very very cheap if you eat in the street) A coffee costs around 7.000/10.000 VND, a coke in the restaurant 15.000 VND, in the supermarket 7.000 VND, a pizza in an italian restaurant around 90.000 VND, a beer 15.000/20.000 VND, milk (1 litre) in the market 17.000 VND, bread with vegetables and meat, banh mi, 10.000 VND and 4 banh xeos (like crepes with seafood inside) are around 20.000VND.

Taking a taxi is very cheap, but most of people rent or buy motorbikes. With 100.000VND you can fill the fuel tank.

The weather now is very hot but in September/Octuber will start the rain season.

I don't know anything about good schools because I don't have any child, but I will ask to my co-workers.

The city is quiet and safe and the beach is beautiful, but like in all Vietnam the traffic is terrible!!!

The rainy season has just started, the wet-est month being August, by Sept\Oct its coming to the end of the season :-)

Can you comment on housing Irene?  I know in HCMC I see alot of rent ads for around $500 (10,000,000 VND) for a western standard apartment suitable for a family with 1 kid.  But I would think in Nha Trang it would be cheaper...about $300 (6,000,000 VND)would you say?

I asked my friends and they pay around 500 USD for 1 bedroom and 600$ a two bedrooms house(in the turistic area) I think a little far from the well-known streets would be cheaper, but I am not sure. I live in a hotel, that's the reason I don't know the prize!

Hello everyone. I have read all the BI regs on visa, so tell me the real story how long can you actually stay before a visa run as a tourist per say... Thank you all

After all the words on Visa lengths - it seems like 90 days is the usual tourist Visa length. I have a friend who gets a 90 day extension each time and he has been getting these for over 3 yrs

That is pretty much the status as far as Tourist or Business visa goes. there is one for 6 months as well, but you need to show an employment contract and so on. The 90 days visa with extentions is not a bad deadl

NHA TRANG - INTERNATIONAL/ANY SCHOOLS

The Foreign children's schooling situation is baaad. There are some Foreigners looking at starting a HOME SCHOOL for a small number of children.

Google => Nha Trang, home, international, school <= and the discussion should appear.

Nha Trang itself used to be, until about 10-15 years ago, THE premier resort town for the south. Now it is a crowded, dirty town much like a small SaiGon with all the troubles.

The beaches are unsafe at night (robbery.assault), downtown a little better. There is a reasonable Foreigner body count which means the market will improve.

It has a casino, tour boats visit (at least the ones that can fit under the casino gondola) and it's an OpenTour bus stop over.

It has a well-known mud bath/spa.

One good thing is that it's a couple of hours from Da Lat where it's cool and where the best veggies in the country grow.

It has good rail connections with HCMC.

There is one dual curriculum international school in town with 1st through 12 grade.  It is APC and a part of the APC school system that has been around for 6 years.  they teach part of the day in Vietnamese and part of the day international curriculum in English.  They have a program for expat children that don't speak Vietnamese.  There is another school about 10 to 15 kilometers out of town toward the airport with Hoan Cau that started up this year. They only have fewer than 15 students total in 1st through 9th grade. There is also a French school with French curriculum and taught in French for 1st through 5th grade that has been in Nha Trang for 6 years.  The French school typically has around 20 students.

A visa is not sufficient for work.
In order to do work, legally, you need to have work permit and residence

Hi Irene,

I'm a local in Nha Trang city.
You can rent a house with 2 bed rooms with AC, at least 1 WC,   kitchen, living room, about 300-350 USD/ month if you choose to live in Nha Trang center areas.

If you can go far a bit 15 mins from center by motorbike / car/ taxi. then you may even find out the same house with price 200-250 usd/ month, usually the owner shall ask you to pay 3 months/ one time pay, and may be ask for 1 month deposit which shall return after you finish your house rent contract with the owner.

Please be aware another thing that you should talk with the owner then they can help you to register you / your family with police areas for temporary residence registration.

Rosekim, you do realize this thread is 2 years old? Irene may not even be in Vietnam by now.

yeah....a little mistake...hahaha

Rental costs are not much lower than in Ho Chi Minh but it will be more challenging, finding a school for the Ho Chi Minh prices.

Bare bones, live in the dark in a nhà trợ, eat cơm chay .. 3 mil a month.

Nice house, housekeeper, decent food .. Up from 12 mill a month.

Saigon, GF with a fammully, 50 mill a month.
