Living and working in Delhi as female engineer

Dear all,
I plan to move to Delhi as an female engineer.
How is the living for a woman in Delhi? Will I get problems for example renting a flat as woman? Will I get problems on the streets?
Of course I know Delhi is a big city and I have to consider some essential rules like in other big citys in the world as well, like no going out alone in dark streets etc.
But I want to know which experience have you made with living in Delhi as a woman?

Thank you in advance

Best regards
Silke

Hi Silke,

Welcome to expat-blog!

I suggest you to read the Accommodation in India articles which might help you to gather some useful information.

I suggest you to read this thread: "Safety" talking about safety this will surely help to get more hints. Thank you! ;)

Nothing to worry. Just reach Delhi. I am sure you will enjoy this city.

just pay heed to the cliches..and you'll be fine..because trust me even I was scared the first time..but its not that bad..
cheers

Yeh... you will be fine. very big city has its own pros and cons...  am sure you will fall in love with Delhi.

Cheers

Hi Silke,

If city is not a constraint for you I will suggest you to plan for Hyderabad, it is a much safer city and an upcoming metro.  On top of all the cost of living in Hyd is much less than other metros.

Faiyaz.

Hi Silke
life is not easy of a single woman that too as an Expat anywhere in India. You will find staring eyes everywhere whether its Work place , Shopping Mall , Religious place , Roads , Transport etc.... I can recall my initial days when I came to Delhi from a small Town and joined Export Industry. There were times when I broke down several times ... but by experience  found my own ways to PROTECT and guard myself. You have to be vigilant at all times ...   :sosad: as if you are in a battle-field. Good luck ...and best wishes ....
Below  links  explain you this better ....

....love this PAINTING of Dhruvi Acharya titled " S** Men " ..... an untold story of every women in India ....she explains her Painting ..... " For S** Men, I wanted an image that would convey with some humor the situation almost every woman in India has to deal with on a daily basis: that men may look at her body as an object, touch her inappropriately, pass lewd comments, and in the worst case, mistreat her body with unimaginable violent acts."

Reminds me of the movie "Euro Trip" where all naked men go running after a girl calling - " Chica, Chica" ......

hi silke,

welcome to delhi. living in delhi is as safe or as dangerous as in any other city in the world. renting a flat for a single woman can be a bit tricky business. but in up market areas it may not be so difficult. sadly it also depends on your nationality! being a man born and brought up and living in delhi, i can say it with challenge all men are not bad.
get back if you need assistance in delhi.

Be very careful.  Do not go anywhere unescorted, particularly at night.  Do not take public transportation at all.

The assumption is that western women are loose and available.  You are going to be approached constantly.  It can be really tough and potentially very dangerous.

Delhi is a good city, where you can live peacefully. Hope you will enjoy your job as well as life there. All the best.

hi....type in google
