I just accepted a job offer at IIT. Field is robotic research. I think Technology and robotics are a blooming field now.

Robotics is new. We need them.
Production stand point... are more efficient than human workers, faster, more reliable, cheaper.
Safety standpoint: Imagine a humanoid run into a building engulfed in fire, rescuing a young boy. Without risk of lives of firefighters. Robotic flying drones that will deliver your mail.

More and more research being done n the field of robotics because it is simply the next step in human improvement. Robots will do the work humans can't/wont do. It is only now that this is getting more interest because technology was just not there yet before. But now it is getting there!
