It's crowded, traffic is perilous, it's polluted and it takes an hour to get anywhere.  I like visiting but I would not want to live there.

I had a really good experience with VLS - very friendly staff, professional instructors and really small class sizes (they offer one-on-one tutoring as well). They have a location in District 1 as well as District 7/Phu My Hung.

Lassho school is a good one

Vietnamese Language Studies (VLS) also has a free pronunciation class that's held every other Wednesday for an hour in the afternoon at their Dist 1 campus.  If you're available at that time of day in the middle of the week, you can get an idea of what the instruction is like.  They have an intensive two week beginning course, and several others.  Tuition is $320USD/6,735,000(approx.)VND. Slightly more than their website says-it's the 2014 price for 40 hours of instruction. Class sizes are generally small and the tuition includes a small notebook and text.

It was produced in the southern dialect while most, like  Pimsleur, were done in the northern dialect.
