Living in lae

Hi Everyone,

I'm considering a job in Lae. I would like to know the following:

How much is the cost of living there?

Would it be wise to accept an offer of 11,000 PNG Kina per month gross with free accomodation, transpo, mobile, health insurance, bonus, annual leave?

How's the way of life in Lae?

Hope to hear from you guys.

Thanks,

Oidemge

Not a bad offer but you will pay approx 35% tax on that.
Everything else is covered which is good.

Thanks Stumpy. Are you also living in PNG? What are the exemptions that may apply to minimize the taxable income? Could you please tell more about how its like in png's everyday life? Thanks

There is no such thing as tax minimization or exemptions in PNG.
You pay and they collect.
I have lived and worked in PNG on various construction projects but presently working in Australia.
The are Filipinos working in Lae so you may want to check out this forum and contact them.

Security is a problem so you need to make sure you do not go out alone, flash money around or wear a lot of jewelry.

Hi:

Been here in Papua New Guinea since October 21st.  Am here in East New Britain Province which do not have security issues.  What I had heard, it is not advisable to walk alone in a public place there in Lae, you need company or police escort to assure your safety.  11,000 Kina is a great offer especially for you as a new comer.  Ask with your superior for salary sacrifice to maximize your net pay based on the total package since tax is very high almost half of your salary goes to the taxman.  Internet connection is very expensive here.  For a simple living like for food and toiletress, I may say 1,500 Kina is enough where I spent 100 Kina per week for internet via skype equivalent to two hours connection.  Live simple then you can have savings.  Most of the goods here is imported that is why it is expensive, but the offer to you is nice.  When are you coming?

Hi Adamsmole,

Thanks for your inputs. I appreciate it.
