Profile

This my fist time participating in any forum and it looks as though I started out all wrong. I put a lot of information in my profile and most should have been in this area. Please see my profile and any replies to the statements would be appreciated. That seems easier than starting over again.

Bob

I've copied and pasted your info here so it's easier for others to see:

I am American, and I would like to live in Ecuador. I am currently in ellijay.

About me
Hi everyone, First, let me say, as others have noted before me, this is a site that appears to answer questions in a positive manner with the intention of being as helpful as possible. Thanks for that. My name is Bob and I have lived in Ellijay, a small town in north Georgia, for the past 21 years. Prior to that I lived in Atlanta and Indianoplis. Grew up in Tennessee. I worked in restaurants for 30 years. I was one of very few "Gringos" working as a waiter and got great exposure to other cultures as my co-workers were from all over the world. The last restaurant owner I worked for was Italian and, prior to that, I worked for 2 Swiss brothers. I have been twice in Brasil, twice in Peru and once in Costa Rica. The Brasil and Peru trips involved travel primarily by motorized canoe into remote areas with no roads, no electricity and no restaurants. I trained in real estate title work in 2002. I now operate my own company. Now I am too busy to do anything else. I have been working 60-80 hours each week for the last 5-6 years. Weekdays are spent doing research and the weekends and evenings are spent putting together reports. I am getting tired and I am getting old and I want to get out of this "rat race". I turned 66 last November and waited until that time to take SS. I get a little south of $1,900.00 each month, I have some savings and I have an IRA. I have been divorced for over 25 years and have no children. My house and vehicles are paid for. As I conducted research, Ecuador kept showing up in the photograph. Keeping in mind that a lot of things that shine can also tarnish very quickly I got in touch with a gentleman I met in Peru years ago who is director of a non-profit conservation organization. He has put me in touch with ecological organizations in Ecuador and in Costa Rica. I will be visiting in late October and part of November. I know some Ecuadorians from the restaurant business. They sill have family in the Cuenca area and have offered to have me visit with them to get a feel for the Ecuadorian lifestyle and viewpoint. I am not going into a decision prematurely or blind. I would appreciate any input and advice you expats with boots on the ground can give me. I have a target date of Dec., 2014. I speak only enough Spanish to get dinner and a beer and locate the restroom. When I visit later this year I would like to personally meet with some of you to get your viewpoints. Thanks to all.
I can speak Mi espanol es muy malo.
My birthday is on 5 November, I was born in 1946"

Thanks for that. I make a living working with information available on computers but only know how to use them in relation to my work. Otherwise I am computer illiterate.

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you're prepared to do the spadework necessary to make a successful move, so I'm sure things will work out for you, regardless of your decision. And you have a very good name. :)

Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob. I once worked in a restaurant where almost all the male employees were named Bob, Robert or Rob. Best group of people I have ever known even if they all did answer to that name at the same time.

Bob

Mila,

After you worked on correcting the format for my profile, I looked at some of your other posts and the replies.

Did you find a workable solution to shipping your bead collection?

I have been collecting electric trains for about 35 years and would like to bring them with me. It would be a shame to save them for retirement and then have to jettison them just prior to full retirement. They are smaller than the Lionel trains most people are familiar with but could be a little heavy. Probably not as heavy as your beads but maybe more bulky. They are not a deal-breaker but it would hurt to leave them behind. Any ideas anyone?

I will miss tools, books, automobiles, fishing gear and other items acquired in a lifetime but the trains would be the worst.

Hey Bob,

Ecuador is a really nice place but reading through your info I didn't get a feeling for what you are trying to accomplish. I am familiar with Ellijay. I know it to be a somewhat ruralish part of N. Ga that I always thought was really nice. You have a paid for house and a decent income. Please do lots of research and maybe even live a few (6) months in Ecuador before you make any dramatic changes that can't be easily undone (don't buy property there). It seems to me you could get out the rat race by simply stopping work. Ecuador is a whole new ball game.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I messed up with the profile and it is pretty jumbled.

Ellijay is still a somewhat rural, mountain community. Beautiful countryside with nice people and relatively clean air. I moved here years ago to be closer to the trout streams. Trouble is that once I moved the house needed considerable maintenance and the commute to Atlanta to work 5-6 days each week took its toll. After starting my own business I have had even less time for leisure activities. Haven't been fishing in years. Haven't taken a vacation since 2002. And I can't seem to shake my rural East Tennessee farm upbringing with its "if you don't work you don't eat" mentality.

I have an opportunity to volunteer with some non-profits that work with protecting habitat for parrots in both Ecuador and Costa Rica. I will spend time in both countries in Oct. & Nov. to determine if this is something I would prefer to do over just finding a home base where my retirement money will go further and allow me to travel, pursue hobbies and just enjoy each day that I have left. Hopefully a lot of them.

If I choose a more comfortable city life I can always take a few days to pursue parrot photography or go fishing.

I have really enjoyed past visits to South America. I traveled primarily to photograph parrots. Ecotours to remote areas with not much time in cities so I have seen some of the good and some of the bad.

I have worked with a lot of Spanish people and enjoyed them as I do most people. I am trying to learn the language.

Ecuador might be that home base I am looking for but there are many things to consider so I am always looking for input, good or bad.
