In need of much info please

Hi Guys,

I am due to move to Kuwait in May/June this year. There is just so much to sort out here in UK however I am eager to get to know as much as possible about where I will be living, what there is to do etc etc when I get there.

I currently work as a Social Worker but dont know exactly how that will work in Kuwait. I am moving because my husband was made redundent last November and has now got a job in Kuwait City. He has had some experience in middle east having worked in Quatar for several months of the past 3-4 years. I am fortunate I dont need to think about work immediately however will be climbing the walls if I am not doing something even voluntary work.

I hope you all dont mind me bending your ears from time to time.

Many thanks

Jackie

most welcomed here on the forum as well as in Kuwait.people get busy here sometimes so dont mind late responses.

hey Jax and welcome to Expat.com - where we'll strive to help you decipher the maze that is kuwait. u will find people looking for volunteers, altho its best to find a job that pays, what exactly is it that u were doing before? whats your degree in?

Great to get a soon reply. I reallyyyyyy need to talk as I am terrified of this move although judging from all your posts you guys are settled and happy in Kuwait. I am a Social Worker here in UK at moment specialising in mental health and working between community and psychiatric hospitals. I dare say that mental health service will be very different in Kuwait so perhaps I will be looking for a complete career change.

Another thing is I am looking at all the different areas where we could stay. The company my husband is going to work for puts us up for 10 days so we can look around. Any suggestions most welcome. However we will be bringing a dog with us so that sort of limits us to a villa??? And I have heard that dogs are not really much liked in Kuwait so I worry about this. It is my husband who really wants to take her...her name is Bella and she is 18 month old border collie.

Thanks for replying...hopefully we will get to know each other over the coming months.

Jax

Jax, my wife who will be joining me soon is a psychologist which is unfortunate as the mental illnesses and problems are very much a taboo in Arab world (they are, after all, a taboo in every society, isn't it...), but I guess there is always room for a private practice. We have cats but the dog might be a problem. Not that they are necessarily not liked, but this is not the best environment for dogs, especially during the summer. If you can afford a place with a yard, that might work.

As for the different areas, search around the forum, it has been discussed a lot.

Welcome, I am still fresh and was very confused for the first couple of days, how I feel like I got the grip. :)

I thought as much.Working with ethnic minority groups in UK is difficult enough. Pyschology would be better suited to private practice I think so your wife will probably have more success continuing her career.

Glad to hear you are settling.

Hi Jax 55

I lived in Abu Dhabi for a couple of years with my family and I took from Greece the dog we had our Wendy a westie (girl).I didn't had any problems.I could take her for a ride early in the morning and we had a villa with garden. Now probably we will move to Kuwait but I think everything will be ok.I will make a search first .As you know it is not easy for middle east people to be very friendly with animals. But it is ok if you are careful.

Let you know for more

Welcome to Kuwait Jax55!

Since you're a social worker with experience dealing with mental illnesses, you can try to work in a school for special needs. There's also plenty of expat groups out here from religious, sports and social, it will depend on your interest.

As for accommodation, it would depend on where your husband is going to work. But if you ask me...it's either Salmiya, Maidan Hawally (near the beach) or Fahaheel.

Good luck!

Thank you so much duresprit. This is really helpful. So perhaps I will be able to work after all and there seems like opportunities out there.

Hi Gogo,

Good to hear this although I think Bella my border collie is in for a real climate change shock from being here in UK. Freezing here today and snow is causing havoc on the roads!!!

You're welcome Jax55. I think they're actually hiring at this time of the year. Just google the different special schools here and submit your CVs online. Who knows maybe you'd get a job offer even before you'd come here. Good luck!
