Living without a car.

Hello,  I like the idea of public transportation.  I enjoy traveling and going to hiking trails, mountain biking, etc.  I want to  have the opportunity to visit other areas and explore the trails.  I understand it is easy to get around in towns and such, but how easy is it to take a trip to parks, etc.  Do buses run from Cuenca to El Cajas?  if so expected cost?  And just out of curiosity, what does car insurance cost?  I wouldn't be looking for anything new.  A 10-15 year old jeep would suit me fine.  Just haven't seen much posted about the cost since most people seem to not have vehicles.
