Information about Antwerp

Hi everyone,

I came accross this site when looking into information about Antwerp. My husband and I are currently living in USA and are about to move to Belgium for his work and we will be relocating in Antwerp. Can someone give me information about housing? we will need to sublet a furnished appartement for few months before deciding a final move...what are the options? Also, what is the best area to live in Antwerp? We like city life , where we could walk for restaurant , cafe etc...Also we would like to be close to international environment. My husband is dutch so he has no language problem, but I don't since I am  French thank you very much,

Regards,
Keko

Try using google "serviced apartment Antwerp".

For long term rents, nearly always unfurnished, except the kitchen which often has large appliances and sometimes even a washing machine. The few furnished properties usually cost more and you'll pay if you damage anything too so usually it's financially best to go for unfurnished and use Ikea.

Choose an area based on work. Use the public transport map to find out how to get to work without a car. Public transport is very cheap and often employer subsidised. Once you are here, you could choose your area according to your own tastes.

Be aware the Bart de Wever has just become mayor of Antwerpen, he has decided to do away with the city's slogan which is something like "Antwperpen for everyone", I'm waiting for him to replace it with "Antwerpen only for white Flemish, no Dutch, no Bruxellois, no Walloons, no foreigners, no-one who is not fluent Dutch"

Hi Makeda1,

Welcome to Expat.com!

I have created a new topic as from your post on the Antwerp forum.

Best of luck,
Christine

thank you for your replu!

wawouh , that's scary to move in a city where the mayor is anti foreigners! but they do it on purpose, I just don't believe this is a one man show! I have read some french forum , most of them say it is hard to make friends but overall, once you learn the language, (ie dutch) people are easier...and they seem to enjoy their lives from what I read...but I've also read some comments iin which people warn new comers of Antwerp being extremely right wing people...

Maye we should then live in Rotterdam and commute? can you tell if this is feasible ? thanks much?

Why would you live in Rotterdam? That would be just crazy. You just make sure you keep your mouth shut and avoid any NVA type people. There are enough non Belgians living in Antwerpen that you could live there for years and make no friends with Belgians and socialise with non Belgians and avoid Bart de Wevver and his supporters.

They are loads of International people living in Antwerp you will soon find a ex-pat group of Antwerp I know Facebook has one. I dont know how active it is however

this forum is agressive to my test ! why can't you be polite with people??

Adios you can delete my account please, bunch of agressors!

You mustn't be English mother tongue.

???????? im confused

I guess there has been some misunderstanding here ..:|

Well said ognatgn, and thanks !

And schoolmum, stop reading the wrong newpapers, and come and see for yourself.  Being a rather important port, Antwerp has a tradition of receiving foreigners for more than five centuries.  Ok, Europeans generally may be somewhat more reserved than Americans, or Australians, and why should this not apply to Belgians.
You make it sound as if one is at risk here if he or she isn't fluid in Dutch.
Are you trying to scare them off ("don't go to the Bronx!") and chase them away with your ridiculous comments ?

Hello.

Could we please calm down here?

Thank you,

Very bizarre comments from DRW. I can find no reference to scaring people away or of ridiculous comments, other than your own of course. What is fluid Dutch?

"You just make sure you keep your mouth shut and avoid any NVA type people." That is that trigger the bad understanding in my point of view.
It is understandable no?
