Family safety and security in Windhoek

We may be posted to Windhoek from the UK. We have children in primary school. We are familiar with living in Africa but have not been to Windhoek before. Is it like Joburg or Nairobi where everyone lives behind electric fences with armed guards and panic buttons, and there are car jackings? Or is it safer. Thanks for any advice.

Hello MHH.

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

Hi

I moved here from South Africa in 2005, and it was the best thing I could have done for my children who were 9, 11 and 13 at the time.

People do have burglar bars, and electric fences. And, although there is crime, like all places, it is very rarely violent, and car-jackings are not the order of the day.

My perception is that it is 10 times safer than Jhb.

Thanks so much for this helpful response.

Coming from Canada I had some of the same concerns but after 20 years of living here I find Namibia one of the safest places to live.
In Windhoek area you will find; bars on the windows, high walls, and electric fences but as you travel outside the city you will see that less and less.
Car jacking's and such are very rare.
There are good local schools and an International School.
Enjoy your time here I know I have.
