Aparently, for tax purposes, I need a certificate of residency to prove I live(d) here before the Kazak tax office will release a statement of my taxes paid, to avoid paying double taxes. However, the British embassy won't issue one here. Any ideas? Anyone from the UK been and done that?

you should apply for a tax residency certificate at the local tax office in almaty. to be eligible for one you should comply with the residency requirements and be able to submit proving docs.

OK, thanks, I take it my residency visa would be the correct document? and / or my rental agreement?

visa + entry stamps.
any other docs proving you've been living in kazakhstan for 6 months straight.
the application form is filled out in russian or kazakh.
