How to go to New York and work

I really would love to be able to go to NY for 6 months and work there. There are several problems that I'm hoping you people might have solutions for!

I'm only a student with a high school qualification and no real work experience because of not being able to work in the country I live in - how do I get around this? what kind of jobs dont require that much experience?

I have an uncle living there but probably wouldn't be able to stay with him. I've considered finding youth hostels that I could live in for a few weeks at a time, any websites I can search around for or other ideas for accommodation for 6 months?

I've been told that I'm being too unrealistic but my determination keeps getting in the way and I just go back to planning out this trip

McDonalds is always hiring.

I'm guessing Mcd's is not exactly visa-worthy work, and now doesn't seem a great time to try working under the table, what with all the illegal immigration kerfuffle going on.

However, the J1 work visa program might fill the bill if you pursue a bit more education. I spent a few summers in college working in a resort town and there were tons of young people from all over Europe working in basic service jobs through this program. Read about it here:

This looks very promising :D Thank you for your answer, it was also really helpful!

No one likes McDonalds?  Sure their food is terrible and they pay minimum wage, but not a lot of companies in a bad economy are going to hire uneducated foreigners without any experience.

Sorry that you feel not having a degree means that someone is uneducated.
Do you know any other jobs where they hire people without experience? There must be more than one.

It's really not up to me.  I think by definiton someone who didn't go to school is uneducated.

ECS's link is probably your best bet.

Try Starbuck's. They offer decent wages and health benefits. Good way to network with people.
