Moving to Kampala: fastest internet provider?

I am planning to move to Kampala for like 6months. I will be working online so I need as fast as possible internet connection. What is the fastest internet connection I can get and which provider provides it? Price? I dont mind to pay more as its very important for my work. 1 Mega would be enough, but I wonder if there is that speed? Even 500kbps might be ok. Iternet providers do not seem to mention speeds on their web sites.

HI jp11,

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

I hope other members will be able to advise you.

I am using Orange (3Gb) for my work here and I am surprised about the speed. The connection is really good and pages are loaded quite fast. I don't know if there are connections of 5Gb or more available.
The selling point for the Orange dongel is in Garden City in Kampala. Here you should be able to get all the information you need.
When are you moving to Uganda?

Ok, thanks for the info - I ll check that. Sounds good. I guess it also depends on where one lives that how good the connection is. Maybe to buy first the dongle and then look for houses to be sure the internet works well there because it would be essential for my business.

I am not sure yet when I would move, but planning (hopefully) in about 2-4 months.

Would be nice if you could run the internet speed test to see how fast it is, like running the http://www.speedtest.net/ (I have here: ping: 25, download 9.8Mbps, upload: 0.8Mbps).

utl seems to provide 3G as well with cheap price 80 000, but speed seems to be only 128kbps which would be a bit slow. I wonder how much faster is orange...

It does differ where you are. Our office is in Bugolobi, the house in Mbuya. Both give me quite a good connection. I do have to say that complicated websites, such as youtube, don't load fast.
Orange differs per moment, now the connection is 3 out of 5 lines. This it was it gave me: ping 85, download 0,34Mbps, upload 0,64Mbps

From what I hear, Orange and MTN are the fastest providers. UTL comes after that.
Hope this helps you

Bugolobi, thats where I visited last month and my friend lives there so I might live there. 0.34Mbps is definitely better than many others. Its still a bit slow but might be just enought to "survive" with my tasks. The thing is that I need to use screen sharing programs sometimes which takes quite a lot internet. But good to hear its more than 0.120 what many have. Interesting that your uppload is almost what I have here in the UK :).

This info definitely helps - to know that its 0.34Mbps.

"youtube, don't load fast"

Thats not really an issue, because even here in the UK they did not load so well just couple of years ago so am not expecting them to work. youtube needs pretty fast internet.

am owne in kampala, we can be friends, hope to here from you, takecare

Don't bother with youtube - unless you buffer first then replay.
I use Orange and am a social media specialist - i.e. online day and night.
Orange also has shops in Kisemeti and Lugogo.
Warid promises the highest speeds in UG - but not tested it.

dont be deceived that orange isnt worth it. i skype everyday and watch and upload videos to you tube. i always use the 1month 10GB data package of 150.000shs per month but i dont always use it all up. good thing is if u havent used up all your data, its carried forward to the next month. 0.5gb - 25.000, 1gb - 45.000shs, 3gb - 85.000shs, 10gb 150.000. the more ur data, the faster the internet and the longer it takes to run out. when i bought 1gb it'd be used up in less than a week because of my video habits but with 10gb am so good. was staying in mutungo and now moved to kololo but its fast all the way all the time.

Orange is definitely best. Do not bother with MTN at all.

Hello,
IŽm new here. I am coming to Uganda and I need to know which is the fastest Internet.
Whats the fastest Upload and Download and price ?

Thanks for the help.

Smile 4G LTE is now the fastest internet provider in Kampala.

Although MTN and Orange have also introduced 4G, Smile's is the quickest. Smile have recently launched in Entebbe, next in Mukono, with roll-out to rest of Uganda planned in 2014.

Thanks for the reply. But how fast is it in terms of how many MBs in Download and Uploads ? How much ?

IŽll appreciate to know.

Why not do some online research yourself for the information ??
You now have the names of the service providers so go for it...

Thanks for the advice thats a great thing that everyone does. But it reachs a place where you need facts not from the ProviderŽs Website but from people who have used and experienced the services and they can testify that whats written is what is offered.

Even in Europe, there are Telephone provides who write that they offer for example 16.000 kBit/s (Download) and 1.024 kBit/s (Upload) but in real sense you get less.

In this case, IŽm looking for someone to help me know the exact situation in Uganda.

Every help is appreciated.
Thanks.
