Moving to AS

Aloha, I am thinking of moving to AS and was wondering how best to find a place to live, on the beach.  Thanks for any info.

Hello Marcella and welcome to Expat.com! :)

A new discussion has been made from your message on the Samoa forum for better visibility.

I think that you should post an advert in the Samoa classifieds > accommodation section.

It may help!

PS: a little introduction too might be appreciated.

The main road runs right along the beach for most of the island so almost all the houses are on the other side of the road from the beach. That is not to say there are none available you might check the Samoa news, they have a web page w/ classifieds.
A couple of things to consider:
The smell from the cannery on the east side of Pago harbor can get really strong. The cannery is in the village of Atuu but the smell can carry for a œ mile or more.
It's good to avoid the sewage processing plant on the west side of Pago harbor for the same reason.  If you use Google earth or any similar program look for the large tank farm, the sewage processing plant is located right along side of it.
Another thing to think about is the Pago Pago Airport (for some reason it's located in Tafuna) Arrivals and takeoffs are not like you are used to in Hawaii but if you hate airplane noise avoid the areas around Coconut point, Freddie's Beach and Tafuna.
To get a truly rural feel you have to go to the east or west sides of the island, it's really quiet and peaceful especially at night. We live on the east side near a village called Amouli and our back yard is a very nice stretch of beach.  We are the only house on the beach side in this area.  The down side is the drive.  It's a œ hr. drive to get to Pago, and an hour to get to Tafuna. The roads are really bad in places (a lot of places).
Another option is on the North side of the Island. There are 3 or 4 really nice villages and no cannery or sewage issues. The down side is the long drive and also some very steep grades to get to the other side, also if you plan to take the bus they are pretty rare especially after dark.
We will be giving up this house after July if you want it. We will be giving notice the end of this month. The rent is cheap, we pay $500 a month.  The beach is nice and the landlord is really cool and never comes around.  It has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths inside, and there's a building outside with a bathroom, a shower, and a storage area.
The  house does have some issues.  When the rain is heavy the roof has some leaks.  The landlord has agreed to fix it, but hasn't yet.  One that was kind of a surprise is that it's pretty common to bury your family in the front yard!  There is one grave here.   It took less time to get used to than you might expect.
Any way I hope that some of this is useful to you.
