Gambia by car

We have travelled over most of West Africa by public transport and now that the new road has been, all but, completed through Mauritania we are considering driving down in our Smart car. We know how mad that sounds but then we were told ten years ago that we were mad to travel West Africa by bus at our age; we survived and now we are heading back having considered most of the planet east of Africa and decided Africa is best.

What we ssek is practical advice on what to do when we reach The Gambia; can we, for example bring a vehicle into the country without a carne?

Hi worldlywanderer!

I hope other members will advise you soon ;)

Regards
Armand

good luck

I've not been that far south on the new road but people who have say the drive is easy. The problems are mainly with police in Senegal stopping that mobile bank they see heading south to withdraw €10, extortionate charges for the only viable river crossing from Mauritania and the cleverest one of all - the escort  charge (I believe about €200) if you foolishly arrive on the border with a 2006 or earlier vehicle having believed what  you read that no Carne is required.

So Worldy wanderer did you do it?

If you can get hold of Red Deisel do so, will cut the fuel bill in Halfish..try to
take enough Fuel, to get you to Layoune in Western Sahara, and fill again there, about
15p a Litre, bit better than here...!!! I used 4 and half Tankfulls in my Passat,
averaged 48.6 MPG. 70 litre tank.. + I took 6 20ltr Jerry Cans.
Take bout 12 to 16 Copies of your Name, Vehicle Reg, passport No. , Picture if you
like, date of entry, date of departure etc.. where you were Born, your Destination to
next Country.. at any Police or other Stops, give them one for a smoother pass..
Saves them Writing it all down...
I have Driven that Route 4 Times now, and found them a Godsend...
If you give me an email, I can send you Blank copy, of what I took..
[email protected]
Whatever you do, take a list of all items in Vehicle, AND get it translated into
French...!!
HEAD DUE SOUTH, KEEP THE SUN IN FRONT OF YOU.....
DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT...
Right, thats the directions covered.
Roads from Tangier are a lot easier too. Straight down then Hug the Coast to
Mauritania.
Watch out for Speed traps in Morrocco.
Fill up your tanks at Layonne, Western Sahara, Fuel is very cheap there.
Go carefully between Western Sahara and Mauri crossing point, lower your Tyre Pressure
to 15 Psi, keep left and head for cars parked on Hill, if you get stuck in the Sandy
bit, it used to cost you 10 euro it's now 100 euro to get out...!!
You now have a good road through Mauritania.
Senegal Border at Rosso is a bit of a Pain,
Look out for Police Stop just down the road from Customs, they will be looking for 200
odd Euro's to allow you to Drive through to Gambia, Haggle, Haggle, Haggle... May get
it for 75 Euro's..
I got through Free last time in Passat.
Take it steady from Kaolack to Border, Road pretty rough, once through Gambia Customs
it Gets Better now..
Get the Ticket for Banjul Ferry on Way,at a Weigh Bridge on left hands side of road a
Mile or so before the Ferry,
It took me 9 Days to drive from UK to The Gambia in VW Passat Estate,
11 Days in Transit 3500kg,
13 Days in 7.5ton Lorry in Nov/Dec 2007,
6 Days another Passat , Dec 2008.
It's a brilliant experience, you'll want to do it all over again, IF, you like Driving
that is...
You would be better with LHD Cars or Vans, Sell Car would be best idea, then you can
put money in right direction, otherwise the new owner would be using it and not passing
it on to School, Charity etc...! Beleive me, there are plenty of "Nice" people over
there, that Aren't all they seem...
Most you want to spend on Car is £500 really, make sure it's a Diesel, preferably Merc,
Puegeot or Japanese 4x4, Shogun, Nissan Patrol etc.
You can send Cars by Ship as well, Just under £500 for Cars, and about £800 for 4x4's.
go from Tilbury.

If You only Travel by Day, you really shouldn't have to much of a problem. there are
plenty of places to stay, all the way through..
Just make sure you carry your Docs, Passport etc, on your Person, and of course Money..
All the Borders are about the Same, Senegal can be Very Hassling at Rosso Ferry, but
hey, your in Africa....
Would welcome Updates to this,
If you have done it recently, especially for Western Sahara and Mauri crossing point
and Senegal Charges..
