it is possible but difficult and will take a few months to process.Sometimes longer than the 3 months you have on a tourist visa.

Your future employer will have to apply for you.

I came to Malta just under 3 months ago as a Canadian to visit a sick friend, I now have plans to stay another 3 months doing a little work.

What visas/permits do I need to be able to stay longer?

As non-EU you have no right to be here over 3 months, and no right to work. You might be able to extend your tourist visa, but you are unlikely to be given permission to work. What does the stamp in your passport say ?

It just gives the date I arrived here on which is 02-04-13

you need to apply for an extension to your visa ASAP - otherwise you must leave not just Malta but the Schengen zone for 3 months.

Then you will have to leave the Schengen area including Malta before the 2 nd July !

There are normally no extensions granted to a 3 month Schengen visa. You would have to apply for temporary residency as self-sufficient or get residency through a work permit.If you overstay without sorting your status you will have no chance of getting a work permit as they only process applications with a valid visa at the time of application and if you get a permit your visa has to be valid when you collect it.

As the processing time even in successful cases is around 8 weeks you won't make it in time. You probably waited too long.

What kind of work would you be looking for? Job qualifications? Work experience?

according to your profile you are from Greece . If so you can work anywhere in the EU without a permit, whether long-tern resident or not.

If you are not an EU citizen it is different.

no, the long-term residency for non-EU citizens is specific to the country that issued it.

You would have to find an employer willing to apply for a work permit for you in Malta.. With a job and work permit you can apply for residency in Malta.

If you leave Greece for a longer period you will actually loose the long-term residency there.

Just be very very careful when buying as things can and do change - make sure its where you want to be and be sure of what and who the other householders are - tenants (which can change) or other buyers.... makes a big difference in terms of the place being looked after properly. its personal choice at the end of the day and its whatever suits you and your circumstance - for me i would never ever buy here, which goes against everything i have ever been taught or learned. There arent really any conditions as such but you are under an obligation to register by obtaining or at  minimum applying for the e-Residency permit....its currently anybodys guess when the dept will catch up with this as its a nightmare right now. have a look at the sticky thread regarding e-residency. and here too http://mhas.gov.mt/en/MHAS-Information/ … dence.aspx

It is not clear what your visa/residence status is but it is specific to Italy and does not allow change of residence to Malta.

You would have to gain residency through obtaining work and a work permit here in Malta which will be difficult.

The job situation here in Malta is not better than Italy.

What kind of work are you looking for? Is it just DJ? A little more information would help in assessing your options in Malta.

i mean any kind of job. ranging from sale assistants, receptionist e.t.c. even club jobs as a deejay.

you will not get a work permit for 'any kind of job'. There are too many Maltese and EU citizens looking for any kind of work. There are not that many jobs going here in Malta.

For the jobs mentioned you would have to speak Maltese.

I would be very, very careful about buying. 75000 empty properties on the island. Resale opportunities? Difficult. Be very wary about inheritance law on Malta; very wary.

there are some horror stories about buying just as there are some good stories. Just be careful check and double check and then check it all again with a known trusted architect and notary.

it can be just as bad when trying to sell too - its not as easy as UK at all.

getting a job in a club is not easy for non-EU citizens.

You will have to find a club willing to go through the work permit process.

The only advantage with a job in entertainment is that :

In respect of culture and entertainment, the employer does not need to provide evidence of a search for EEA/Swiss/Maltese candidates. He or she does however have to elaborate in the covering letter on the reasons for the choice of the third country nationals concerned.

There are many DJ's in Malta and it is mainly a seasonal summer job.

Once you are a normal resident of Malta you can apply for a driving licence. Normally you sign up with a driving schgool and then have to pass the driving licence test.

I'd appreciate a word of advice on my situation. I am Croatian national, currently residing in Croatia. I moved back home from London a few months ago (lived and worked in UK since 2009) but still working for the same online gaming company (remote work). However I no longer have UK work permit.

My company has an office in Malta and would like to have me working there, which I am looking forward to as I am very much interested in Malta.

With Croatia recently joining the EU this was supposed to be an easy move, but recent restrictions for Croatian nationals imposed by Malta government made this slightly harder for me than initially planned.

Unfortunately, most of the official websites are not yet updated with specifics for Croatian nationals wanting to work in Malta, so I am in need of advice.

My job is quite a specific one, I am required to do translations to and from Croatian and English; I am also a senior specialist in several other fields within my department, which is in Customer Service in online gaming (it is highly unlikely this position can be filled by other EU/Malta nationals due to language requirement). My company will gladly provide me with a job offer in Malta and with any additional assistance I may need.

I do not have any qualifications for the position really, because there are none (degree, courses etc). I also have a dependant, my wife, who was a highly skilled immigrant in UK (Masters degree in business) and will accompany me.

I do realise I require a work permit in order to work here in Malta, so I am asking you for any additional information anyone here can provide. Your experience, knowledge and advice is highly appreciated.

welcome to the forum.

The ETC guidelines have not been updated since Croatia joined the EU. I'm not aware of any restictions for Croatian nationals but that does not mean that there are none.

Generally speaking if your company wants to have you working in Malta it will work. Especially as you are an EU citizen.

If there are 'work market considerations' involved your company just hast to phrase the job offer so that it fits for you and only you -))).

Hi Ramesh,

you will need a work permit to work in Malta and to able to apply for residency.

As an Indian citizen you will need a visa to enter Malta and the Schengen area.

as you are married to a Maltese citizen you don't need a work permit. You will have the same rights as a Maltese/EU citizen when you move to and reside in Malta with your husband.

What kind of job are you looking for? Qualifications are everything to get a 'decent' job.

Customer support usually requires speaking one or more non-English EU languages as a native speaker. Some companies offer jobs for native English speakers.

But if you are flexible and smart I'm sure you will find something. It might take time though.

You will need to have your qualifications confirmed here in Malta. Then you will have to register yourself with the Mumn. You will need to find an employer willing to apply for a work permit for you in Malta. Then you can apply for residency. I think you also have to get approval from your own Government.

hi ricky. the offer is between 759-800 euro. no accommodation is included with the package. do u think that the salary will compensate the cost of living in Malta? i'm planning to temporily work as a room attendant then figure out how to acquire my residency or how to register there as a nurse.

You are processing your work permit? As a non-EU ? Have the regulations changed? Work permits are usually granted for a maximum of 1 year and are specific to the job. Any change requires a new application.

I think the salary will mean a struggle but could work. Depends to what standard of living you are used to, 800 €/month will cover pure basics. Are they paying your flight to Malta?

actually, im not yet sure about the details of the visa and fot how long my contract will be. they told me that once i submitted my requirements, they'll be processing it right away. im not sure either if they will be paying for my plane ticket.

it takes weeks or maybe even a couple of months to get a work permit as a third-country national. Your future employer should be keeping you updated on the process.

Once you have the work permit you have to apply for ordinary residency which is usually granted for as long as your work contract runs but at the longest for one year. It has to be renewed after one year. If you decide to change your job your new employer will have to apply for a new work permit as it is not transferable.

You will have to get a Social Insurance number, tax number and make sure that you are covered by health insurance.

That's about it !

that will depend on the type of visa you are interested in. It can take several weeks or even up to 2 months . If you want to come as a tourist they will want proof that you have the funds for the visit and a return flight ticket and health insurance to cover the stay in Malta. If you come with a work contract they will check that everything is legimate and correct and that the salary is at least minimum wage and that health insurance exists. But that should be sorted out by your agent !

I know that there are agencies specifically dealing with  potential workers from the Phillipines but I'm not quite sure of the exact details of the services offered.
